STATE SPORTS: Area softball teams still alive in consolation brackets; Sequim doubles wins second match to survive

SELAH — Port Angeles, Sequim and Quilcene began their respective state softball tournaments with losses before responding with wins Friday.

Port Angeles fell to Lake Washington 6-2 in its first game before beating Orting 9-2 to stay alive in the Class 2A tournament at Carlon Park.

The Riders will play Colville on Friday night.

Sequim fell to Capital 4-1 in round one of the 2A tournament and then beat Ellensburg 7-6 in come-from-behind fashion.

The Wolves will finish Friday against Fife, the same team they played last Saturday in the West Central District championship game.

If Sequim and Port Angeles both win Friday night then they will face each other Saturday morning.

Quilcene fell to Almira-Coulee-Hartline for the second straight year in its Class 1B opener, this time by a 14-4 score.

The Rangers then beat Oakville 10-3 in the consolation bracket and will face Curlew on Saturday 2 p.m. as they go for their second consecutive top-four finish.

2A Boys Tennis

SEATTLE — Sequim doubles team Brandon Payne and Matthew Richards is still alive in the 2A state boys tennis tournament at Nordstrom Center on the campus of the University of Washington.

Payne and Richards opened the state tournament with a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Coleman Schnebly and Erik Hurson of Ellensburg on Friday.

The Sequim duo came back to beat Tumwater’s Ryan Gudbranson and Nathan Eliason 6-2, 6-2.

The Wolves will next play Jimmy Do and Noah Durette of Black Hills on Saturday morning.

If Payne and Richardson win, they will then play for fifth or eighth place later in the day.
