STATE GOLF TOURNAMENT: (Updated) Sequim’s Sweet in second place

Five other Olympic Peninsula golfers make second-day cut

OLYMPIA — Sequim’s Ben Sweet is tied for second place after the first day of the state 2A golf championships being held at Capitol City Golf Club.

Sweet shot a 71 on the opening day, two strokes out of first place. Von Wasson of Centralia is leading the field with a 69. Wes Bothel of Sehome and Zach Miller of White River are tied with Sweet at 71.

Sweet’s teammate Dominic Riccobene is tied for 17th with a Day 1 score of 77.

Both Riccobene and Sweet appear plenty safe to make the Day 2 cut. The top 40 boys plus ties move on to the second day.

Cole Smithson of Sequim shot a 117 and will not make the cut for Day 2.

Phoenix Flores shot an 81, good for 35th place. Edun Bailey of Port Angeles shot an 82, good for 36th. Both Flores and Bailey had to wait to see if they would qualify for state with a handful of golfers still on the course and they did as the cutoff for state remained at 83.

For the girls, Hannah Wagner of Sequim has the top local score with a 90, good for 22nd place and good enough to make the cut for Day 2. Brooke Gelinas of White River is leading the field with a first-day score of 69. Lauren Greeny of Pullman and Lily McCauley of Tumwater are each at 70 after the first day.

The girls tournament is at Tumwater Valley Golf Club.

The top 30 girls plus ties move on to the second day. Port Angeles’ Piper Williams just made the cut for Day 2 after a lucky break. After one of the girls’ golfers withdrew, that moved Williams up a spot, putting her in a tie with several other golfers at 30th after shooting a 96.

Port Angeles’ Claire Osterberg finished 50th with a 110 and Lauryn Chapman finished 59th with a 132.
