RICHLAND — The Sequim boys golf team finished second overall at the Class 2A State Golf Tournament at Columbia Point, the best finish by a Wolves golf team — boys or girls — in school history.
Sequim’s three golfers, Blake Wiker, Paul Jacobsen and Andrew Vanderberg, totaled 72 points to finish behind repeat team champions Liberty of Issaquah (107 points) during the two-day tournament which wrapped Wednesday afternoon.
Wiker, a junior, followed up his day one 74 with a 4-over par 76 to finish in a tie for 10th individually.
Jacobsen, a sophomore, finished a stroke behind Wiker in 13th place after shooting rounds of 74 and 77.
Vanderberg, also a sophomore, tied for 25th, shooting 80 Wednesday after a day one score of 78.
All three players improved upon their 2017 finishes at state.
Wiker and Vanderberg tied for 26th last year, while Jacobsen was 37th.
Liberty’s Chase McIntosh won the individual title by four strokes (69, 70—139) over Selah’s Dylan Apodaca (69, 74—143).
Shea finishes fifth
Sequim’s Sarah Shea earned her highest finish in her third and final appearance at the Class 2A girls state golf tournament, taking fifth Wednesday at Horn Rapids Golf Course.
Richland.
Shea improved on Tuesday’s opening round 83 with an 8-over-par 80 Wednesday, the fourth-best round of the day at the difficult desert golf layout.
Shea, a senior, finished 15th as a sophomore and 22nd last season.
Shea will play golf for Western Washington next season.
Washington State University-committ Kenedee Peters (72, 76-148) won the 2A title by eight strokes over Washougal’s Kallie Sakamoto (78, 78-156) and Bellingham’s Jada French (77, 79-156).
1A girls
Port Townsend’s Mackenzie Lake finished 19th at the Class 1B/2B/1A Girls State Tournamenat Hangman Valley Golf Course in Spokane.
Lake, a sophomore, shot an 81 Tuesday and opened play Wednesday in seventh place, but struggled and posted a 99.
Davenport’s Kaysa Panke won the tournament by 11 strokes (69, 68-137).
