SPOKANE — Sequim senior Alex McMenamin capped her high school girls golf career with her fourth consecutive top-10 state finish after coming in sixth at the Class 2A State Tournament at Indian Canyon Golf Course on Wednesday.
McMenamin previously placed third as a freshman in 2014, ninth as a sophomore and fifth last season.
The three-time Olympic League MVP shot rounds of 80 and 81 in helping lead the Wolves to fifth place as a team with 54 points, their second straight top-10 team finish. Sequim was fourth last season.
Junior Sarah Shea rebounded from a rough opening round 96 Tuesday to post an 82 Wednesday and finish all alone in 22nd place.
She finished 15th last season.
East Valley (Yakima) won the team title with 113.5 points.
Ephrata’s Kenadee Peters won her second individiual title as the Washington State committ shot rounds of 74 and 72 to top East Valley’s Morgan Baum by nine strokes.
Sequim boys ninth
The Sequim boys team earned a top-ten finish at the Class 2A State Tournament at the Creek at Qualchan in Spokane.
The Wolves tied for ninth with East Valley (Yakima) with 30 points.
“I think they did really well, especially considering how young a team we have,” Sequim coach Bill Shea said.
“This is the first time in several years that four players qualified for the state tournament, and three made the cut.
“I think they played great, especially for two freshman and a sophomore to represent so well, it sets us up for further success in the years to come.”
Sophomore Blake Wiker and freshman Andrew Vandenberg finished in a tie for 26th place individually. Wiker shot rounds of 82 and 81 while Vandenberg shaved five strokes off his day one score (84) by posting a 79.
Another Sequim freshman, Paul Jacobsen, ended up 37th after shooting rounds of 83 and 85.
“They all wanted to shoot a little better than they did and they all are capable of shooting better,” Shea said.
“The courses on the eastside are different than on the westside. The air is thinner and goes farther in the higher elevation, the greens are faster.
As we progress and the kids get better and better and more acclimated to playing over here, their results will improve.
“I think if they held state at any Western Washington location, the guys would find that comfort zone a little faster.”
Liberty (Issaquah) won the team championship with 120 points.
Othello’s Patrick Azevedo won the individual title, shooting rounds of 73 and 76 to finish at five-over-par 149 and defeat Liberty’s Chase McIntosh by two strokes.
Lake places
Port Townsend’s McKenzie Lake finished 34th after shooting rounds of 98 and 104 in the Class 1B/2B/1A state tournament at Horn Rapids Golf Club in Richland.
She’s the first Redhawk girls golfer to place at state since Jenny Grauberger was sixth in 2010.
Davenport’s Kaysa Panke shot rounds of 73 and 79 to win the individual title by 15 strokes and South Whidbey won the team title.
