LIBERTY LAKE — Port Angeles’ Nate Anderson not only made the cut to the second day of the boys 2A state golf championship at Liberty Lake Golf Course, he’s in the top 10.
Anderson shot a 76 on his first day and is tied for ninth place in the state.
Anderson was the only Port Angeles boy to make the cut to day two Wednesday, but two Olympic Peninsula girls made it.
Leading the boys, and leading by a lot of Burlington-Edison sophomore Wyatt Brownell, who dominated with an 8-under-par 64 in the first round. That is seven shots ahead of second place. Anderson likely cannot catch Brownell, but he has a legitimate shot to finish as high as second place, with is only five shots ahead of him.
Burlington-Edison appears well on its way to a boys state championship as five of the top 12 golfers in the state are from that school.
Port Angeles’ Sky Gelder shot an 87, missing the cut of 83, but not by much. Max Gagnon of Port Angeles shot a 90, while teammate Reid Schmidt shot a 91.
Anderson will tee of at 8:40 a.m. Wednesday.
Girls
Claire Osterberg of Port Angeles and Ava Johnson of Sequim both made the cut for the second day. Osterberg shot a 94 at MeadowWood Golf Course in Liberty Lake, good for 32nd place. Johnson shot a 96, good for 36th and just making it under the cut of 97.
Just missing the cut for the second day was Sequim’s Emily Post, who shot a 100. Her teammate Raimey Brewer shot a 109 and Port Angeles’ Autumn Wilson-Rowland shot a 114.
Johnson and Osterberg will be one group apart Wednesday with Johnson teeing off at 7:20 a.m. and Osterberg at 7:30 a.m.
Leading the girls is Jayme Dwight of Ephrata, who shot a 72. However, there is a six other girls within five shots of her so she does not have the comfortable lead that Brownell has.
