LIBERTY LAKE — Port Angeles’ Piper Williams and Phoenix Flores finished as the top golfers from the Olympic Peninsula at the state 2A girls and boys golf championships in Liberty Lake.
Williams, playing at Meadowwood Golf Course in Liberty Lake, finished 17th in the state, moving up from her first-day position of 20th. She shot an 87 Wednesday to go along with her score of 90 Tuesday for a two-day total of 177. She also had the top score of any Olympic League girls’ golfer at state.
The top girls score was by Charlotte Giffin of Cedarcrest. She shot a 69-69-138 to win the state title by seven strokes. Sehome was the girls state champion with 93 points to White River and West Valley’s (Spokane) 77.5.
Meanwhile, Flores finished 34th at the boys tournament held at Liberty Lake Golf Course a few miles away. Flores was consistent, shooting an 82 Tuesday and an 81 Wednesday to finish with a score of 163. He also had the top score from the Olympic League. Flores qualified for the second round of state by just one stroke, but moved up several spots Wednesday.
Port Angeles’ Edun Bailey finished 38th (81-87-168) as the Roughriders finished with 10 team points, good for 10th in the state.
Sequim’s Cole Smithson was 39th at 79-90-169 and his teammate Zachary Thompson was 43rd with an 82-94-176.
The state champion was Logan Medcalf of Lynden, who shot a 70-71-141. Burlington-Edison, which had four golfers in the top 16, won the team state championship by a wide margin with 132 points.
Sequim’s Cronin Carter competed in the first round and shot a 93, which was not good enough to make the cut for the second day of competition.
In the girls tournament, Claire Osterberg of Port Angeles (107), Lauryn Chapman of Port Angeles (108), and Jelissa Julmist of Sequim (127) competed in the first day but did not make the cut for day two.
