SPOKANE — Sequim’s Alex McMenamin shot an 80 on her first day at the 2A State Golf Tournament Tuesday, good for seventh place.
McMenamin, who has placed at state three straight years, is seven strokes behind Shelby Baum of East Valley (Yakima). She easily made the cut for the second day at the tournament.
A trio of Sequim boys is bunched up within two shots of each other. Leading the Wolves is Blake Wiker with an 82, nine strokes behind first-place Patrick Azevedo of Othello. Sequim’s Paul Jacobsen shot an 83 and Andrew Vanderberg an 84.
All three Sequim boys made the final cut, with Vanderberg just squeaking in.
Josiah Carter of Sequim’s score was one of the last to come in Tuesday afternoon. He shot an 89, which was not quite good enough to make the cut for the second day at state.
For the Sequim girls, Sarah Shea shot a 96, which was good enough to make the second-day cut by one stroke.
Samantha Smith of Sequim shot a 99 and missed the cut by just two strokes.
Patrick Morton of Port Townsend shot an 89 at the first day of the state 1A tournament held in Pasco. He missed the cut for the second day by six strokes.
Jacob Madison of Port Townsend shot a 93, while Redhawk Mackenzie Lake shot a 98 at the girls 1A/1B/2B tournament in Richland.
Lake’s score was in the upper half of the 1A/1B/2B girls, but the second-day cut was 89. Only 14 1A/1B/2B girls qualified to go to the second day of that tournament.
