STATE BOWLING CHAMPIONSHIPS: Port Angeles girls come in sixth in the state

TUKWILA — In the Port Angeles girls bowling team’s first trip to state, the squad came in sixth among 12 schools.

The Roughriders finished with a total of 6,155 pins. Hudson’s Bay is the 1A/2A state champion with 7,571 total pins while R.A. Long was second with 7,167 and Klahowya was third with 6,721.

Olympic League rival North Mason was ninth with 5,845 pins.

Port Angeles got three girls in the top 31, with all three knocking down more than 900 pins.

Zoey Van Gordon led the way, coming in 20th with a total pin count of 934.

Xoey Penn was 29th with a 912 and Leilah Franich was 31st with 902.

The Port Angeles scores were rounded out by Kenadie Ring, who finished 56th with a 764 and Izzy Spencer, who came in 58th with a 755.

Sequim had a pair of bowlers at the meet and both finished in the top 50.

Victoria Nava was 42nd with an 836 and Skylar Krzyworz was 47th with an 820.

There was an interesting battle for the state champion between Sanaa Tyler and M.J. Westmoreland, both of Hudson’s Bay.

There went into the final game tied at 960.

Tyler ended up winning the state championship by out-bowling her teammate 185-176 in the final game.

The Riders’ top game at state was in Game 2, an 813, led by Van Gordon’s 176 and Franich’s 175.

That was the second-best game rolled among the 12 teams in Game 2.

Van Gordon followed up with the best individual game by a Roughrider with a 179 in Game 5.

Hudson’s Bay took command of the team competition in Game 3 by bowling a 939, the top team score of the day, with the five bowlers averaging a 188.

Tyler bowled a 245 in Game 3, the top individual score of the day.
