PUYALLUP — Chimacum’s volleyball team ended its season on a high note despite not picking up a win in Nisqually League action Monday night.
The Cowboys (1-11, 3-12), with only two seniors and a junior, took third-place Cascade Christian (7-4, 7-4) to five games in their final outing.
Cascade won 23-25, 23-25, 25-15, 25-22, 15-10.
“When we won the first two games, I got my hopes up,” coach Sally Dankert said.
“It was a good match for us, though.”
The Cowboys, dominated by underclassmen, lost several early season matches in five games.
This season was a learning experience for Chimacum and it will help the young players in the years to come, Dankert said.
Leading the Cowboys on Monday were senior twin sisters Alyssa and Aubrey Gale in their final high school match.
Alyssa had 10 kills, three blocks and seven digs while Aubrey contributed four kills and two blocks.
The only junior on the team, Mallori Cossell, sparked Chimacum to the win in the first game with 13 straight serving points.
The Cowboys were down 23-12 when Cossell stepped up to the serving line. When she stepped away, the Cowboys had a 25-23 win.
Cossell also had seven aces and eight digs.
Sophomore Lauren Thacker helped with six kills, eight digs and three aces while sophomore Megan Dukek had 13 digs and 11 assists from the setter’s position.
Olivia Baird, another sophomore, earned nine digs, three kills and two aces while freshman Lexie Cray dug down for seven digs and she ended up with 100 percent serving with three aces.
Freshman Kiersten Snyder had 11 digs and two aces while sophomore Kristen Castillo and freshman Alyssa Hamilton also contributed in the match.
