SPORTS: Wilder Baseball opens regional tournament Tuesday

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. — Wilder Baseball will be trying for a repeat appearance at the Babe Ruth World Series by winning the 16-18 regional tournament this week.

Wilder, the defending regional champion, went 2-3 at the 2012 Babe Ruth World Series in Weimar, Texas.

The Port Angeles-base elite team earned another shot at the World Series by captured second at the state tournament last week in Ephrata.

Wilder, 20-8 on the summer season, opens regional competition Tuesday against South Oregon. Action starts at 2 p.m.

Then Wilder will play South Washington at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Idaho at 4:30 p.m. Thursday and Wyoming at 9 a.m. Friday to conclude pool play.

Wilder is in the National Division with Idaho, Wyoming, South Washington and South Oregon while in the American Division are Alberta, South Oregon Invite, Montana, North Washington (Washington Nationals of Port Orchard) and host team Klamath Falls, Ore.

The top two teams of each division will play in the tournament semifinals Saturday with the regional championship game set for Sunday between the two semifinal winners.

Regionals is being hosted by the Crater Lake 16-18 Senior Babe Ruth team at the historic Kiger Stadium in Klamath Falls.

The opening ceremony is today starting with a parade at 5 p.m. at Veterans Park, followed by a guest speaker and a barbecue at 6 p.m.

The regional champion advances to the 2013 World Series, scheduled for Covington County, Alabama, from Aug. 15 through Aug. 22.
