SPORTS: Wilder Baseball continues tourney quest with dual wins in Oregon

SALEM, Ore. — Wilder Baseball left little doubt in marching toward the semifinals of the Post 9 Showcase Classic on Friday.

The North Olympic Peninsula All-Star baseball squad posted a pair of dominating victories, beating Ryder Showtime (Vancouver, Wash.) 17-2 and C&H Tides (Santa Clara, Calif.) 10-5 to place themselves in the winners’ bracket of the tourney.

Wilder smashed four home runs in its thrashing of Ryder Showtime, beginning with Austin McConnell’s three-run shot in the first inning.

Also adding homers in the win were A.J. Konopaski, Cody Sullivan and Spencer Middleton.

“The wind was blowing out and if you just get the ball up it just carried,” Wilder (14-5 overall) coach Rob Merritt said.

Sullivan earned the win on the mound in the mercy-rule affair, giving up seven hits and two earned runs while striking out six in five innings pitched.

Wilder had a total of 16 hits, with A.J. Konopaski, Sullivan, Middleton, Easton Napiontek and Derek Crain all having multi-hit games.

Middleton broke open Wilder’s second game against C&H Tides with a three-run triple in the seventh inning.

He was also the winning pitcher on the mound after going six innings with six hits, one earned run, two walks and three strikeouts.

Wilder played host Salem Post 9 on Saturday for a spot in the finals. The score was not reported.
