CHENEY — Clallam Bay’s Adam Lovik and Sequim’s Brian Savage are two happy campers.

Lovik took the state title in the shot put at the Class B state track meet in Cheney on Saturday with a throw of 55 feet, 3½ inches to win the title and overtake the former state record of 54-7 set by Selkirk’s Phillip MacArthur in 2004.

“You’ve got to go up to 3A to find someone to beat him,” Clallam Bay track coach Steve Erickson said.

“He never had to worry and was leading from start to finish. We’re pretty pumped about it.”

Lovik also took second in the discus (155-0) as well as placing 11th in the javelin.

At the Class 3A state meet in Pasco on Saturday, Sequim senior Brian Savage threw a 195-08 in the javelin — defeating defending state champion Tyler Cathey of Hanford by one foot — to take the state title and set a new state meet record.

The old record of 187-1 was set in 2003 by Kelso’s Sean Sickles.

Wolves’ track coach Brad Moore said he and Savage had worked on a newer, faster running-approach for Savage that was the key to his win.

He said they had tried it a number of times before at the district meets but that Savage wasn’t very comfortable with it.

“We decided to have a ‘just go for it approach,”‘ Moore said.
