Two college athletes with ties to the North Olympic Peninsula are performing well for their respective schools.
Luis Quintana of Quilcene is playing well for the Pacific University men’s soccer team in Forest Grove, Ore., while Alison Maxwell of Port Angeles is running strong for the Middlebury College women’s cross country team in Middlebury, Vt.
Quintana scores two goals
NEWBERG, Ore. — Luis Quintana, a senior from Quilcene, scored two goals for the Pacific men’s soccer team in a 5-3 loss against the George Fox Bruins in Northwest Conference action at Austin Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon.
Quintana led the Boxers with his two goals and four shots.
Quintana’s first goal came in the 38th minute when Alex Arrington (Soph., Portland, Ore.) crossed from the right side on the ground.
Quintana placed the ball perfectly between the posts, right down the middle.
The second Quintana goal was off a corner kick from Grady Bryson (Soph., Montana City, Mont.) in the 77th minute.
George Fox opened the scoring in the 13th minute as Luke Dickens found Luke Hammer, who fired past Michael Summers (Jr., Beaverton, Ore.)
The Boxers would tie the game in the 31st minute when Jorge Mandujano (So., Corneilus, Ore.) crossed from the corner to Bryson.
Bryson headed the ball from the right side past Bruin goalkeeper Elliot Davis.
The Bruins would take a 2-1 lead just 22 seconds later when Andre Van der Werff crossed from the right side to find Hammer, who shot to the top of net, his second goal of the match
Less than seven minutes later, Dickens would score for the Bruins to increase their lead to 3-1.
Dickens shot to the right corner of the net.
The Bruins would score two insurance goals in the 71st and 76th minute to increase the lead to 5-2.
Summers and Zach Cohen (Jr., Grafton, Calif.) combined for the loss in the net for the Boxers.
Summers recorded one save, while Cohen tallied three.
The Boxers (3-9-0, 1-6-0 NWC) next play host to Linfield on Wednesday evening under the lights at Lincoln Park Stadium.
Cross Country
Middlebury College
WESTFIELD, Mass. — The Middlebury Panther cross country teams were in action Saturday at the James Earley Invitational hosted by Westfield State.
Alison Maxwell of Port Angeles finished in the top 10 in the women’s race.
The third-ranked Panther women captured the 43-team race with 28 points, followed by Amherst (64), and Wellesley (158).
Senior Addie Tousley (Kensington, Md.) was the top finisher for the Panthers as she captured second place among 453 racers, coming in with a time of 21:50.
Junior Katie Rominger (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was next in fourth place (22:19), followed by junior Emily Attwood (Cape Elizabeth, Maine), who earned a fifth place finish in 22:35.
Sophomore Sarah Guth (Wilton, Conn.) rounded out the four Panthers in the top seven (22:36), while sophomore Alison Maxwell (Port Angeles) came in 10th (22:50) to round out the scorers.
The 13th-ranked Middlebury men won the 40-team event with 23 points, followed by Amherst (111) and Connecticut College (140).
Senior Jack Davies (Grosse Point, Mich.) won the 429-man men’s race, covering the course with a time of 25:40.
Middlebury then placed runners in third, fourth and fifth places to make up four of the top five finishers.
Junior Nate Sans (Princeton, Mass.) came in third place in 25:49, followed by senior Patrick Hebble (Sudbury, Mass.) in fourth (25:54) and sophomore Kevin Wood (Lincolnshire, Ill.) in fifth place with a time of 26:07.
Junior Greg Krathwohl (Ipswich, Mass.) wrapped up the Middlebury scorers with an 11th place finish (26:31).
