SPORTS: Sumner beats Sequim 5-1 in first round of playoffs

TACOMA — Sumner beat Sequim 5-1 in the first round of the 2A bi-district baseball playoffs Tuesday afternoon.

The Wolves will have their backs against the wall because now they have to win three loser-out games to qualify for regionals.

And one of those games could be against rival Port Angeles if the Roughriders lose their quarterfinal game Wednesday.

The Wolves next play the loser between Port Angeles and either Interlake or Foster on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Foss High School in Tacoma in the consolation quarterfinals.

On Tuesday, Sequim pitching ace Karsten Wake threw five shutout innings against Sumner but took the loss when Sumner scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning when the Sequim defense misplayed a few balls.

At least three of the runs scored against Wake were unearned.
