Memorial Day weekend for high school sports parents and fans means the end of the line for the 2011-2012 school year.
Finals in all spring sports will be today and Saturday in venues around the state.
The majority of North Olympic Peninsula athletes will be participating in track and field championships, from the Class 2A level all the way to 1B.
Port Angeles and Sequim opened 2A competition Thursday while Chimacum, Port Townsend and Forks will take part in 1A state today and Saturday.
Crescent, Clallam Bay and Neah Bay will be in the 1B track battles today and Saturday. See Thursday’s editions for more on track.
Also this weekend will be the Sequim and Quilcene softball teams looking for state trophies plus a Sequim girls doubles tennis team and a Chimacum/Port Townsend boys doubles tennis squad at state.
All eyes will be on the Wolves softball team as it tries to repeat as 2A state champion.
Last year the Wolves not only won state but also completed a rare perfect season with no losses.
An undefeated season is not possible, but the Wolves could still manage an extremely rare occurrence on the North Olympic Peninsula, a second consecutive state title.
The Wolves open against West Valley of Spokane at noon today at Carlon Park Complex in Selah.
West Valley went 2-2 at state last year and did not place.
The winner moves on to the championship quarterfinals against the winner between Aberdeen and Mount Baker at 10 a.m. Saturday.
The losers of the two games play at 2 p.m. Friday in a consolation first-round contest.
The 2 p.m. winner will play a third game Friday, at 6 p.m. in the consolation second round.
The 2A championship game is set for 2 p.m. Saturday.
Quilcene, meanwhile, starts 1B state play against Almira Coulee Hartline at 1 p.m. at Gateway Sports Complex in Yakima.
The winner plays the Touchet and Selkirk winner in the championship quarterfinals at 5 p.m. today while the losers of the two games play in the consolation first round today at 5 p.m.
The 1B state title game is set for Saturday at 4 p.m.
In tennis action, the Sequim girls doubles team of Stacy Hanson and Katrina Chan will participate in the 2A state championships at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle today and Saturday.
The Chimacum/Port Townsend boys doubles team of Egan Cornachione and Benny Ryweek also will play in the 2A stae tournament in Seattle.
