Sports: State playoff action

SPOKANE — Tyler Henley scored 25 points and Scott Patten added 20 to carry seventh-ranked St. George’s to a 64-50 victory over fifth-ranked Clallam Bay in the opening round of the state Class B boys basketball tournament Wednesday afternoon.

Melchor Ramos, Danny Angulo and Fidel Angulo each scored 13 points for Clallam Bay. The 19-2 Bruins had been unbeaten before losing to Darrington 66-65 in the Tri-District Tournament title game the week before.

Clallam Bay now has lost two straight games heading into the consolation quarterfinals today against Tekoa-Oakesdale (15-12).

The do-or-die consolation game starts at 10:30 a.m. in the Spokane Arena.

Eatonville 66, Chimacum 53

UNIVERSITY PLACE — The Eatonville Cruisers ended the Chimacum Cowboys’ three-game winning streak in the first round of the 2A West Central District Tournament on Wednesday night at Curtis High School.

The Cowboys (12-14) now are in a loser-out game on Friday between the loser of Klahowya and Steilacoom in a late game Wednesday. The Friday game starts at 6 p.m. at Curtis High School.

The winner of Friday’s game plays the loser between Eatonville and the Steilacoom-Klahowya winner Saturday at 8 p.m. for the final district berth to state.

Girls Basketball Port Townsend 51, Steilacoom 49

UNIVERSITY PLACE — Port Townsend’s Tuesday night victory in the district playoffs has set up a fourth match-up with Eatonville, this time for the 2A West Central District Tournament championship and No. 1 seed to state.

Tonight at 8 the two teams will play at Curtis High School with the winner moving on to state, and the loser meeting the winner between Steilacoom and Orting in a loser-out game on Saturday.

Port Townsend (19-6) has lost the three previous meetings with Nisqually League champion Eatonville this season.
