SPORTS: Stalemate for Port Angeles and Sequim in girls soccer; Port Townsend wins 1-0

SEQUIM — For now, the bragging rights go unclaimed.

Sequim and Port Angeles played to a 2-2 tie Saturday in a seesaw battle that lived up to its rivalry hype.

The Wolves nearly pulled out the victory, but Roughriders freshman Maddie Boe scored a goal after a corner kick to tie the score.

Port Angeles notched the first goal when Brittany McBride drilled a 35-yard shot from the right side in the 24th minute. Danielle Schimschal got the assist.

Sequim got the equalizer in the 48th minute on a corner kick put-in by Maeve Harris.

In the 66th minute, the Wolves took the lead on a goal by Vianey Cadenas.

The Riders had 13 shots in the game and Sequim had 12.

Port Angeles starts league play on Tuesday at Olympic.

Also on Tuesday, Sequim will host Kingston.

KINGSTON — The Redskins earned the road victory Saturday despite being out-shot by the Buccaneers.

At the 14th minute, Jewel Johnson raced through the heart of the Kingston defense and was fouled 30 yards from the goal.

Irina Lyons perfectly placed the ensuing free kick in the goal for the game’s only score.

Though the Buccaneers possessed the ball for longer and took more shots, they were unable to break down the Port Townsend defense.

“We were tenacious and well-disciplined in defense,” Redskins coach Colin Foden said.

“We defended well all over the field, and every player deserves a special mention for a really good win and the seasons first shutout.”

The defense was so solid that the Kingston attack was limited to long-range shots that Port Townsend goalkeeper Malia Henderson handled with ease.

Port Townsend opens Olympic League play by hosting Bremerton on Tuesday.
