SEATTLE — Sequim’s Mallory Maloney had the best finish for area athletes at the Class 2A tennis championships.
He captured seventh place for the Wolves at the University of Washington’s Nordstrom Center on Saturday.
Maloney lost in the first round to Riley Newman of South Whidbey before bouncing back to beat his next two competitors.
Mallory lost to Joe Kwiatkowski of Lindbergh 6-2, 6-0 to finish his season.
Kwiatkowski went on to place second at the tournament.
Also competing for the Wolves were boys doubles team Bryon Boots and Michael Lee along with the girls doubles team of Stacy Hanson and Katerina Chan.
Boots and Lee dropped their first-round match before bouncing back in the second round to defeat Kenny Saari and Cody Schultz of W.F. West 6-3, 6-2.
They lost their next match to Adrian Villanueva and Sam Bayna of Lindbergh, who went on to place second.
Hanson and Chan lost a tough first-round bout 7-5, 6-4.
They rallied in the second round to beat Hannah Johnson and Kalyn Nelson of RA Long 6-1, 7-6 before eventually succumbing to Bella Hoyos and Megan Mullarky of Bellingham.
Hoyos and Mullarky won the state championship for the 2A girls doubles division.

Second round: Maloney (Sequim) def. Dawson (Franklin Pierce) 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.
Third round: Maloney (Sequim) def. Denenny (Cheney) 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Fourth round: Kwiatkowski (Lindbergh) def. Maloney (Sequim) 6-2, 6-0.
Boys Doubles
First round: Thorpe/Goebel (Sehome) def. Boots/Lee (Sequim) 7-5, 6-2.
Second round: Boots/Lee (Sequim) def. Saari/Schultz (W.F. West) 6-3, 6-2.
Third round: Villanueva/Bayna (Lindbergh) def. Boots/Lee (Sequim) 6-1, 6-1.
Girls Doubles
First round: Dorr/Wilson (Squalicum) def. Hanson/Chan (Sequim) 7-5, 6-4.
Second round: Hanson/Chan (Sequim) def. Johnson/Nelson (RA Long) 6-1, 7-6.
Third round: Hoyos/Mullarky (Bellingham) def. Hanson/Chan (Sequim) 6-4, 6-2.
Riders at state
SEATTLE — The Roughriders’ Micah Roos picked up one win at the 2A state championships while their boys doubles team had two tough losses against No. 1 teams.
Competing for the Riders were senior Micah Roos and the doubles team of senior A.J. Konopaski and junior Hayden McCartney.
Roos won in the first round, setting up a second-round match against Olympic League competitor Zach Fohn of North Kitsap.
Fohn dropped Roos in a tough 6-3, 6-0 match.
Roos battled in the next round before Riley Newman of South Whidbey claimed the match 6-1, 6-4.
Konopaski and McCartney had a tough draw, getting the No. 1 team from East Valley High School in Yakima.
The match was back and forth but McCartney and Konopaski were finally defeated 6-4, 6-4.
The Rider duo next faced the No. 1 team from Bellingham and saw their season end 6-4, 6-2.
“I couldn’t be prouder of the way my guys played,” said coach Brian Gundersen.
“The work that they have put in and how well they played in this tournament was impressive.
“Micah, A.J. and Hayden competed at the highest level.”
Roos will be playing for Linfield next year while Konopaski will be playing baseball for Pacific Lutheran.
