SPORTS: Sequim’s Jayson Brocklesby wins state in high jump; softball games delayed

TACOMA — Sequim’s Jayson Brocklesby won the 2A state high jump title with a jump of 6 feet, 5 inches Friday at Mount Tahoma Stadium.

Brocklesby, a senior, entered the state meet tied for first in the 2A classification with North Kitsap’s Taylor Stephens. At state, Brocklesby out-jumped Stephens by one inch.

Sowder third

At the 1B state track and field meet at Eastern Washington University, Crescent’s Josh Sowder placed third in the discus with a throw of 121 feet and 4 inches.

Taholah’s Joseph Winn won the 1B discus title with a 141-10, and Brenden Mills of Cedar Park Christian (Mountlake Terrace) placed finished second with a 127-11.

Softball postponed

In Selah and Yakima, the start of the 2A and 1B state softball tournaments were pushed back due to rain.

Sequim and Port Angeles were scheduled to open the 2A tournament this morning in Selah, but will instead play at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. this afternoon.

Sequim faces Selah, while Port Angeles plays Granite Falls.

Meanwhile, in Yakima, Quilcene’s 1B state tournament opener against Almira Coulee Hartline has been postponed until tomorrow.
