SEQUIM — Left-hander Matt Bereiter tossed a one-hitter to spark the Sequim baseball team over Port Townsend in Olympic League action Monday.
On a dry but windy and cold day, the Wolves took only five innings to shut out the Redskins 10-0 and get closer to a playoff berth.
Bereiter (2-4) struck out nine while allowing just one hit and no walks in the mercy-rule five-inning game.
“It was real windy right to left, and that helped our lefty, Bereiter,” Sequim coach Dave Ditlefsen said.
“That gave his pitches a sharp boost.”
The wind also played havoc, though, with the Sequim defense early.
The Wolves had only two errors, and they both came in the first inning.
“After that, everyone settled down and got used to the cold,” Ditlefsen said.
Right now the Wolves, 8-4 in league and 9-7 overall, “are pretty solid for the No. 2 seed” for league in Class 2A competition, “and can catch the No. 1 seed,” Ditlefsen said.
Alex Gillis and Preston McFarlen led Sequim at the plate as both batters went 2-for-2 each in the game.
Gillis scored two runs, had two stolen bases and walked while McFarlen knocked in two runs, scored a run and walked.
Kyle Kelly, a freshman, started the game on the mound for the Redskins, going four innings.
Ryan Aumock pitched the fifth inning for Port Townsend.
Aumock had the Redskins’ lone hit, a single in the fourth inning.
Next, the Wolves will host North Kitsap and the Redskins host Klahowya on Wednesday.

Softball Forks 17, Winlock 6, 5 innings
WINLOCK — The Spartans picked up their second win of the season, their first Southwest Washington League victory Monday.
“There’s a lot of smiles around here right now,” Forks coach Scott Justus said.
The Spartans won despite heavy rainfall.
“The second game was postponed because of the weather,” Justus said. “We shouldn’t even have had the first game.”
But the Spartans (1-6, 2-10) aren’t complaining because of the rare win.
And the rain didn’t really faze them.
“It wasn’t a Forks rain but it was coming down hard,” Justus said.
Jillian Raben won the game, fanning five while allowing just two earned runs and four hits.
Raben walked none in the five-inning mercy-rule game.
Raben helped her own cause by going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two stolen bases while Gwen Gillette was 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
Raven McCann went 2-for-3 with a stolen base while Alissa Shaw was 1-for-1 with an RBI.
The Spartans are scheduled to play at Lake Quinault today and then will host Montesano on Thursday.

SEQUIM — The Wolves easily won despite taking it easy against the youthful and overmatched Redskins in Olympic League action Monday.
It was 15-0 in the first inning with no outs when Sequim coach Mel Hendrickson ordered his players to leave base early to get out of the inning.
Sequim (10-1, 13-2) still sits in second place for Class 2A teams behind unbeaten North Mason.
The Wolves next host North Kitsap on Wednesday.
Demiree Briones and Chelsea Winfield combined for a perfect game for Sequim.
There were no hits, walks or Sequim errors in the five innings.
Winfield and Jazzy Bradbury both had home runs in the game while Maddy Zbaraschuk and Cindy Miller both went 3-for-4 each.

Boys Soccer Montesano 2, Forks 1 (SO)
FORKS — The Spartans had a tough Southwest Washington League shootout loss Friday.
Forks was in the game the whole way, taking it to a sudden-death shootout before falling two shots into the second shootout.
The Spartans went ahead 1-0 in the 17th minute on a goal by Alexis Ayala. He received a throw-in assist by Fernando Hernandez.
Montesano tied it up in the 70th minute, and the game was still tied after two overtimes and five shots into the shootout.
Forks goalkeeper Shag Cress had two saves in the shootout.
Girls Tennis Sequim 5, Olympic 2
BREMERTON — The Wolves improved to 3-5 in Olympic League action with the victory Friday.
Sequim swept the doubles and captured No. 1 singles as Kyla Hall beat Victoria Lagat 6-3, 6-1 in the featured match.
Winning in doubles were Katrina Chan/Serena Okamoto, Elizabeth Shore/Hanah Smith, Hillary Smith/Anna Prorok and Calli Norman/Kelsey Feten.
The Wolves next play at Klahowya in Silverdale on Thursday.
Lacrosse Olympic Peninsula 9, Liberty 3
RENTON — The area club team, the Mountaineers, picked up a convincing win over an aggressive Liberty High School team.
It was the Mountaineers second straight win and their sixth for the season.
Olympic Peninsula is in second place in the Olympic League with a mark of 5-1 in league and 6-4 overall, trailing only Klahowya.
Albert Banier led the Mountaineers with four goals while Montana Collins added three.
Jacob Dostie and freshman John Hanson had one goal each.
Olympic Peninsula led 3-1 at halftime and 6-1 going into the fourth quarter.
