SEQUIM — The Sequim Wolf Pack won two out of three games from Port Angeles White in the opening weekend of the North Olympic Youth Football League at the Sequim High School stadium Saturday.
Port Angeles White beat Sequim 26-6 in the Prep game (ages 6-7) but the Wolf Pack claimed victories in Junior Varsity (ages 8-10) competition by the score of 52-20 and Varsity (ages 11-12) action by the score of 45-14.
The Junior Varsity game went smoothly for the Sequim team.
“We had a great game and I think everyone was happy,” Sequim assistant coach Steve Hazard said.
The Sequim Wolf Pack Varsity team, meanwhile, had a successful day with good running plays and successful passes, coach Rex Lott said.
“It was a great way to get the season started — a lot of hard work paid off against a good team,” Lott said.
Port Townsend plays Neah Bay
NEAH BAY — The Port Townsend Braves youth football team, meanwhile, captured all three games from the Neah Bay Warriors on the road Saturday.
Port Townsend’s C-squad (6-8 years old) started the day out with a 40-6 victory.
Scoring touchdowns for the Braves were Noa Montoya, three touchdowns and one extra point; Bruce Seton, one score and two extra points; Solomon Sebastian, one score and one extra point; and Dylan Tracer, one score.
The young Braves defense held the Warriors to one touchdown.
The defending champion Port Townsend B-squad (9-10 years old) started the defense of its league title with a 44-13 victory.
Isaiah Mason led all scorers with three touchdowns while Peyton Hundley added two scores, Jaden Steinfort added one and Berkley Hill ran for a score and passed for a touchdown.
Melvin Tuulaupua and Payton Lake added extra points.
Detrius Kelsall led the defense with 10 solo tackles.
The B-squad will continue the defense of its championship against the Port Angles White team this coming Saturday with a kickoff time of 2 p.m. at Civic Field in Port Angeles.
Defending champs
The Port Townsend A-squad (11-12 years old) faced the league defending champions from Neah Bay and came away with a 20-6 victory.
Neah Bay scored first with a touchdown in the first quarter.
The Braves answered back with a 45-yard touchdown pass form David Su’a (195 yards passing, 56 yards rushing) to Carson Marx (130 yards receiving, 66 yards rushing) and a David Su’a extra point.
The Braves made defensive adjustments and stopped the Warriors from passing the ball with interceptions from Austin Khile (two picks), Domenick Zack and Matthew Widmer.
Su’a led all tacklers with 15 solo while Alex Martin, Tony Cooper and Tyler Manthe all had sacks for the Braves
The start of the second half featured a 60-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Domenick Zack.
The Warriors could not get in the end zone again as the Braves stopped their drives with an over-powering defense.
The Braves sealed the win with a Su’a 40-yard run and a Carson Marx extra point.
This was the first time in five years that Neah Bay’s A-squad was defeated on its home field.
The Braves next travel to Port Angeles on Saturday for a game at Civic Field.
PA Green plays Chimacum
PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Future Riders Green squads claimed two out of three games from the Chimacum Cowboys at Civic Field on Saturday.
Starting the day off, the Future Riders C squad beat Chimacum — the defending league champion — 32-12, giving Port Angeles Green a boost for the start of a great season.
Future Riders Green B squad put up a valiant effort but came up short, losing 25-0 to the Chimacum Cowboys.
Future Riders A squad ended the day with an impressive 25-18 win.
