SEQUIM — David Mattie of Port Angeles barely beat out Sequim’s Sean O’Mera for the medalist title but the Wolves won team honors at a three-way nonleague boys golf meet Tuesday at Dungeness Golf Course.
Mattie shot a 2-over 74 for the 18 holes for best score while O’Mera was right behind with 76 on his home course.
Sequim won with a team score of 412 while Port Angeles was second with 428 and Mount Vernon was third with 433.
Casey Rude was second for Sequim and tied for fourth overall with 82 while Paul Lemely shot 84, and Kim Trac and Brandon Kettel tied with 85 each to round out the top five for the team.
Joe Petersen was runner-up for Port Angeles with 82, also tied for fourth overall, while Chad Kennedy had 85, Nick Warren 91 and Russell Thorne 96.
Mount Vernon’s Brian O’Laughlin was third overall with 80 while teammate Blake Forloin also shot well with an 82, tied for fourth.
“I was pleased with the play of David (Mattie) and Joe (Petersen) today,” said Port Angeles coach Mark Mitrovich. “They played well considering the conditions, and really led the team well.
“Our younger players need to play more consistently.”
Mitrovich named Mattie the player of the match.
The teams were playing summer rules, which means players can’t mark their balls and clean them off on the fairway like they can using winter rules.
There was little rain during the match but the course was damp in spots. The wind picked up at times and it was cool.
Port Angeles’ home course, Peninsula Golf Club, is playing by winter rules but Dungeness starts playing by summer rules early, Mitrovich said.
Port Angeles, 2-1, next plays at the Gold Mountain Olympic Course against the Bremerton Knights on Thursday.
