Sports: Sequim wins fourth consecutive league football title

SEQUIM – The most overlooked third of the game continued to pay dividends for the Sequim High School football team in Friday night’s rain-soaked Class 2A Olympic League affair.

Special teams played well for the second week in a row as the Wolves held on for a 28-25 win over the Klahowya Eagles, clinching the 2A league crown – Sequim’s fourth straight league title under head coach Erik Wiker.

The win also locked up the team’s fourth consecutive playoff appearance.

“Our special teams coach [Matt] Ashley deserves a lot of credit,” Wiker said. “He has them playing well.”

Led by some long returns from senior Kincaid Nichols – including an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown – the Wolves (3-0 in league, 6-2 overall) won the showdown of league unbeatens.

Nichols racked up 198 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns, both coming in a first half that saw Sequim jump out to a 21-7 lead early in the second quarter.

Klahowya (3-1, 5-3) had to play catch-up the rest of the way.

“Our special teams coach puts in an amazing amount of time [on schemes],” Nichols said.

“Everyone just did their assignments. People were hitting hard.

“I saw guys’ feet in the air. All I had to do was run. I had the easy job.”
