SEQUIM — Erik Wiker, head coach of the Sequim High School football team, and Port Townsend defensive coordinator Nick Snyder were sharing a familiar moment at the end of Friday night’s Nisqually League football game.
For the third straight season Sequim beat Port Townsend — this time 36-29 — in what is rapidly establishing itself as the best football rivalry on the North Olympic Peninsula.
Both teams entered this year’s contest, Sequim’s homecoming, with 7-0 records and the Wolves are still chasing their first perfect season since 1978.
After Friday’s game, as players and coaches shook hands near midfield, Snyder looked at Wiker and wished the Wolves the best.
“You take it and go all the way,” Snyder said, referring to the state football playoffs that begin in about three weeks.
Port Townsend will have a chance to do the same.
You see, 3A Sequim and 2A Port Townsend may be rivals in league, but when it comes to the state playoffs, they never have to meet.
