SEQUIM — The Sequim High School girls tennis team easily swung past Chimacum in a season-opening doubleheader for both teams on Tuesday afternoon.
The Wolves won both Nisqually League matches 5-0 on a blustery and bitter afternoon in the rain shadow.
Senior Rondale West opened things up for Sequim with a 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 1 singles spot in the first match. She then combined with Staci Stratton to win 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 1 doubles spot during the second match of the afternoon.
Stratton, a sophomore, won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles in the opening round.
“It’s great to get started,” Sequim head coach Mark Textor said afterward. “I thought our girls played well and I think we have a very strong team.
“We have a nice combination of experience and youth, good senior leadership and great attitudes.”
Senior Britney Maloney and sophomore Justine Textor added two wins each. They combined for a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 1 doubles, then each came back with singles wins.
Sophomore Stacia Bibler and freshman Laine Briggs added a 6-0, 6-0 doubles win in the opening round of the twinbill and sophomore Jenna Hall won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
Bibler won 6-0, 6-1 in second-match singles play, and the doubles team of Barb Minshall and Jamie Rief added a 6-0, 6-2 victory.
Despite being swept, Chimacum coach Jacque Peters was glad to get the season under way.
“It was nice to have a start against a good, hard-hitting team,” she said. “Because now we know what we need to practice for the rest of the year.”
