SPORTS: Sequim tennis pair’s hopes dashed at state tourney

SEATTLE — The Sequim boys doubles tandem of Reed Gunstone and Mallory Maloney had their state title hopes dashed at the Class 2A state tennis tournament at the University of Washington today.

Gunstone and Maloney, who had cruised through the first two rounds with a pair of straight set victories on Friday, fell to Sehome’s William Giller and Micah Koenig 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals. The Wolves will take on Selah’s Kevin Bertelsen and Devin Teske later today for third place.

Sequim’s Kyla Hall and Blaire Maloney finished sixth in the 2A girls doubles tournament, going 3-2 on the weekend. They reached the fourth-place match after knocking off their teammates, seniors Angela Richards and Diana Earl, in the consolation semis 6-2, 6-0 early on Saturday.

Hall and Maloney then lost to Tumwater’s Emma Anderson and Olivia Koelsch 6-4, 6-1 in the fourth/sixth-place match.
