SEQUIM — The Sequim-Port Angeles football rivalry is in danger of becoming one-sided.
The Wolves dropped the Roughriders 42-7 before a packed house Friday night, moving to 4-2 against their rivals since their annual meeting was renewed in 2004.
Sequim came up with numerous big plays, many from multi-purpose threat Clancy Catelli, and 416 yards of offense to secure their second straight blowout win over Port Angeles.
“It’s always nice to beat PA,” said Sequim coach Erik Wiker, whose teams have outscored the Riders 187-117 in six games.
“I would say we played pretty darn good tonight.”
Nobody played better than Catelli.
Sequim’s version of slash — as in wide receiver/linebacker/special teams playmaker — did a little bit of everything on Friday.
He returned an interception 60 yards for a touchdown, hauled in a pair of scoring passes, blocked a punt, and, if that wasn’t enough, registered three tackles for a loss.
“It was amazing,” said Catelli. “Before the game I actually felt really sick. I wasn’t feeling good at all.
“Once I was out there I just felt really good . . . just pumped.”
His 136 all-purpose yards, three touchdowns and 10 total tackles certainly spoke to that.
“He’s a big time football player,” Wiker said of his 6-foot-2, 220-pound star.
“He’s an athlete. He’s one of the fastest guys on the field. He has some of the best hands on the field. [And] he has a natural knack for the game. He’s going to be faster than big guys and bigger than the small guys.
“So he’s a mismatch problem.”
Sequim (2-0 overall) was a mismatch in general for the Riders (0-2).
Despite some early hiccups against Port Angeles’ surprise 3-4 defense — including an opening drive fumble from quarterback Drew Rickerson — the Wolves moved the ball with ease most of the night.
Rickerson completed 12-of-19 passes for 246 yards and four touchdowns, while running back Travis Decker ran for 123 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.
Rangy wide receiver John Textor caught four balls for 131 yards, with touchdown grabs of 59 and 54 yards.
And the defense shut down first-year Port Angeles coach Dick Abrams’ Wing-T attack, holding it to only 56 yards and no points with its starting unit.
“We got a long ways to go, but Sequim is a really good team,” Abrams said.
“They execute really well and they have a wide open offense for their talented skill people. If you don’t match up with their skill people you’re in trouble.
“We wanted to run the clock and try to keep it close, and we did for a while there, but eventually those big plays came back to haunt us.”
The biggest came with four minutes to go in the second quarter and Port Angeles down 8-0.
Facing second and long, Rider quarterback Colby Adamich rolled out for a pass to the tight end.
But Catelli jumped the route, intercepted the throw and ran 60 yards untouched for the score and an eventual 16-0 edge.
“[Wiker] actually called blitz, and then he looked back at me and called it off,” Catelli said.
“He said ‘Watch the [tight end].’ I just kind of sat there, then I saw it and went with it.”
A quick Rider four-and-out followed, then Rickerson hit Textor for a 59 yard touchdown pass on a double screen two plays later, putting the Wolves ahead 22-0 at the break.
Rickerson found Textor for another long score on the Wolves’ first drive of the second half and the rout was on from there.
“We started off a little shaky,” Textor said. “But as the game went on we just got stronger and stronger.
“For us seniors, the last time ever playing PA . . . I’d say we went out on an extremely good note.”
Abrams tried to find a silver lining for his team following the loss.
Yet other than the performance of fullback Nathan Cristion, who ran for 94 yards on 14 carries, there were few bright spots.
“I thought we played well in the beginning and then they’ve got some real big playmakers that made big plays,” Abrams said.
“It’s nice to play in a big game like that, a big rivalry game. We’ve got a young team that is going to learn from that experience.”
