SPORTS: Sequim shuts out Port Angeles in soccer opener

PORT ANGELES — Rivals Sequim and Port Angeles kicked off the 2009 boys soccer season with a nonleague contest won by the Wolves 4-0 on Saturday night at Civic Field.

While both teams had issues with roster depth due to a lack of early-season practices, Sequim displayed a solid scoring touch around the goal.

“Our midfield of Zane Carey and freshman Evan Watkins played well, and it was good to get the win,” Sequim coach Dave Brasher said.

The Wolves took a 1-0 lead into halftime after an Aldo Garcia run down the left side ended with an aggressive tackle inside the goal box and a subsequent penalty kick strike by Austin Sanford.

Sequim added to its advantage when Eric Huston knocked in a goal off a Zane Carey header in the 50th minute.

Port Angeles’ Sean Keegan had a chance to cut into the Wolves lead with a penalty kick, but Sequim keeper Matt Bedinger made a sure save on a ball kicked low and to his right.

“A goal there really would have turned the game around and put them right in it,” Brasher said.

The Wolves added insurance goals when Huston knocked in a bumbled cross in the 62nd minute and Saul Flores scored the final goal off an assist from Sanford.

CASTLE ROCK — Wilson Avila-Luna netted a hat trick within the first 11 minutes of Saturday’s season opening soccer match, helping the Spartans cruise to an easy win.

“We have quite a few new varsity players this year, so it was a good game for us to get our feet wet,” Forks coach Bryan Bowers said.

Bowers did all he could to avoid embarrassing the new Rockets team, taking out Avila-Luna right after his third goal and using multiple lineup changes and substitutions to soften the blow for Castle Rock.

“They have had a team in the past, but they cancelled last season and they were pretty young and inexperienced today,” Bowers said.

Forks (1-0-0) visits Rochester on Wednesday.
