SEQUIM — The Sequim Wolves scored six touchdowns in the opening 16 minutes Friday night to roll 53-0 in their Olympic League opener against Klahowya.

The Wolves bounced back after the big nonleague football loss to Class 1A power Meridian the week before.

“After last week’s loss, we became more of a team and started taking responsibility for each other,” Sequim coach Erik Wiker said.

“We had a good week of practice and all the little things made a difference.”

Sequim senior quarterback Drew Rickerson had his presence felt, running in two scores and throwing a touchdown pass to Nick Ramirez.

The Wolves led 27-0 after the first quarter and 46-0 at the half. With a running clock, courtesy of the 45-point mercy rule, Sequim would score one more time.

Sequim (1-0, 2-1) travels to Bremerton next week while Klahowya (0-1, 0-3) will host North Kitsap.

PORT TOWNSEND — The move down to eight-man football is looking better and better for the Quilcene Rangers.

Quilcene posted its second straight shutout to begin its first eight-man season in the Northwest Football League on a rainy Thursday night at Memorial Field.

“It was a really tough game, really wet and sloppy,” Quilcene coach Alan Reimann said.

C.J. Schreier ran for 108 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries while Kolby Schreier caught a 20-yard scoring pass from senior quarterback Brandon Bancroft.

Edgar Perez had 10 carries for 80 yards on the ground and added 9 ½ tackles and a sack on defense.

Bancroft ran for a touchdown as well — one of two times the Rangers found the end zone in the second quarter to take a 14-0 halftime lead.

The Rangers had a total of 233 yards on the ground.

Shreier’s 59-yard run in the fourth quarter put the game away for good.

Quilcene (2-0 in league and overall) hosts Clallam Bay next Saturday.

VASHON ISLAND 36, PORT TOWNSEND 8

VASHON — The Redskins held Vashon Island to 13 points at halftime but couldn’t hold on in a Nisqually League game Friday night.

“We beat them in the playoffs last year,” Port Townsend coach Tom Webster said. “But we will keep learning from our defeat.”

Defensively, Mel Thorton made his presence known with nine solo tackles and one assist. Zac Olsen added nine solo tackles, an assist and a sack.

It was pouring rain, but that didn’t stop the Pirates from having a big third quarter, scoring 20 points for a 33-0 lead.

“Vashon is the real deal,” Webster said after being on the road for the third week in a row.

Port Townsend (0-3) will have its home opener against Lakeside this Friday night.

HOQUIAM 19, FORKS 3

HOQUIAM — The young Spartans fell short against Hoquiam in their SWL-Evergreen Division opener Friday night at soggy Olympic Stadium

Alexis Ayala kicked a 31-yard field goal in the first quarter as Forks took a 3-0 lead.

It was the Spartans’ only points, though.

“It felt like we had established the line of scrimmage,” Forks coach Andrew Peterson said. “And we actually moved the ball this week.”

The Grizzlies’ controlled the air in the first half, then switched to a power-running attack in the second half as Nick Barry rushed 102 yards.

Sophomore quarterback Evan Erickson ran for one touchdown, passed for another and picked up key yards on sneaks for the Grizzlies.

“We did have some crucial mistakes,” Peterson said. “But we never gave up and the coaches are extremely pleased with how we played.”

Forks (0-1, 0-3) hosts Rochester on Friday at 7 p.m. Stats were provided by thedailyworld.com.

NEAH BAY 50, CLALLAM BAY 0

CLALLAM BAY — Drexler Doherty caught two touchdown passes from Josiah Greene as the Red Devils beat their archrival Bruins in a nonleague game Saturday.

The teams put together a noncounting game quickly after Crescent had to forfeit its contest against Neah Bay because of a lack of players. The youthful Bruins had an open date.

The game was called at halftime because of the mercy rule with the Red Devils ahead 50-0.

Greene passed twice to Doherty, one a 59-yard score and the other went 20 yards.

Titus Pascua opened the game with a 79-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Greene passed to Doherty for the two-point conversion and 8-0 lead.

Two minutes later, Greene hooked up with Doherty for their first TD pass, and Doherty ran the ball in for a 16-0 lead.

Zeke Greene returned a fumble 25 yards to give the Red Devils a 22-0 lead. The Josiah Greene-to-Doherty pass connection gave Neah Bay a 24-0 lead.

First-quarter scoring ended on a 39-yard run by DeShawn Halttunen.

Greene’s second pass to Doherty made it 36-0 in the second quarter, and the two teamed up for the two-point conversion for 38 points.

Halttunen scored on a 50-yard run to make it 44-0, and then Leyton Doherty finished off the scoring on a 34-yard run.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 46, CHIMACUM 6

PUYALLUP — The Cowboys ran into a buzzsaw in their Nisqually League game Saturday night.

Chimacum scored a touchdown early when Devin Manix ran a kickoff return to the end zone in the first quarter.

But that’s all Cascade would yield in the game.

The Cougars, ranked No. 2 in 1A, made the state championship game the past two years.

“We needed to play our best game to compete, and we didn’t play our best game,” coach Shawn Meacham said. “Cascade Christian is very quick, very disciplined and well-coached.”

The Cowboys next play at Orting in a league game Friday night.
