SEQUIM — Hot-shooting Gabe Carter helped Sequim get a good start in Olympic League play, as the Wolves beat Port Townsend 54-36 on Friday night.
Carter was 9 for 11 from the field, including 4 for 6 on 3-pointers, and scored 22 points.
Carter also pulled down six rebounds and doled out four assists.
“It was good to see Gabe come out shooting the ball,” Sequim coach Greg Glasser said.
“What I liked is he was still looking to make the extra pass.”
The rest of the Wolves (1-0, 1-1) didn’t shoot nearly as well as Carter, but the defense stifled the Redskins throughout the game, especially in the first half when Port Townsend only managed 10 points.
Erik Christensen and Jayson Brocklesby both had big defensive games.
Christensen blocked five shots and Brocklesby had six steals, five in the first half.
Glasser said Brocklesby’s steals came without being overaggressive and affecting the overall team defense.
“Jayson had a lot of steals, but still contained himself,” Glasser said.
“He wasn’t jeopardizing anyone else [by going for steals].”
Brocklesby also scored nine points for the Wolves.
Port Townsend coach Tom Webster said Sequim’s length and athleticism made it difficult for his team to rebound and score.
He added that the Redskins’ defense had its moments as well.
“Our defense forced them into a lot of turnovers, too,” Webster said.
“There were times when we defended well, and we need to continue to do that; we need to do it for all 32 minutes.”
Port Townsend’s offense was much better in the second half.
Cody Russell and Brian LeMaster led the offense with 11 and eight points, respectively.
“Cody shot the ball well, and when we actually ran our offense we scored some points,” Webster said.
The Redskins (0-1, 0-1) were without one of their tallest and most athletic players, Skyler Coppenrath, who is close to returning after suffering a concussion near the end of the football season.
Both coaches pointed out that it’s early in the season — this was only Sequim’s second game and Port Townsend’s first — so their teams are nowhere near being finished products.
“It’s only going to get better,” Glasser said.
