SPORTS: Sequim, Port Angeles softball teams advance to state tournament

TACOMA — Nobody’s raining on the Sequim softball team’s parade this spring.

A year removed from having their state bid cut short by a driving storm that canceled half the district tournament, the Wolves are perfect and headed for state.

The Wolves went 3-0 at the Class 2A bi-district championships Friday and Saturday at Sprinker Recreation Center to improve to 22-0 on the year.

Rival Port Angeles (19-3), meanwhile, also earned a state berth by claiming third place and making it to state for only the second time in the past 36 years.

But Sequim owned the district tournament, outscoring its opponents 37-4 in three mercy-rule victories.

The Wolves blanked Kingston 10-0 in six innings on Friday, then pounded Port Angeles 15-4 in six innings in the semifinals Saturday before ripping White River 12-0 in five innings in the championship game.

“Everybody played well [at districts],” Sequim coach Joel Lewis said. “Our pitching was strong, we played solid defense and we hit the ball well.”

Demiree Briones pitched all three games for the Wolves, giving up just a total of four runs, all to the Riders.

Sequim hit well up and down the lineup with Lea Hopson, the Olympic League MVP for the second straight year, Rylleigh Zbaraschuk and Maddy Zbaraschuk coming up big in each game.

The state tournament is scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Carlon Park in Selah.

Port Angeles third

TACOMA — The Roughriders went 3-1 at the district tourney to nab the third seed to 2A state.

They had two easy games Friday, belting Eatonville 10-2 and blasting Lindbergh 17-2.

On Saturday, they lost to Sequim in the semifinals before beating North Mason 7-4 in the third-fourth seed game.

The Riders last went to state in 2009 for the first time in 34 years.

“We have a few girls who have been here before,” coach Buddy Bear said. “They deserve it. They have been working very hard.”

Some of the upperclassmen who will be leading Port Angeles at state are Stacy Webb, Kelsey Hinsdale, Hannah Wahto, Emily Drake and Tori Holcomb, Bear said.

Webb (15-3) started on the mound in all four games for the Riders, having just the one tough game against the Wolves.

“Stacy was a workhorse for us in the tournament but Hannah Wahto was on fire for us,” Bear said. “Hannah had an outstanding tournament.”

Wahto slugged out 10 hits with a home run and two doubles.

She also helped lead the Riders to a school-record 20 hits in the Lindbergh game.
