SILVERDALE — The good news is Sequim gets a bye in the first round of the West Central District 2A boys basketball playoffs for finishing in the top four in subdistricts.
The bad news is that the Wolves had a tough subdistrict mini-tourney, losing both games and settling for the fourth seed.
After losing 66-55 to state power Clover Park on Friday night, the Olympic League runner-up Wolves (15-7) lost 69-56 to Olympic League champion Kingston (18-4) on Saturday evening.
Still, Sequim gets that all-important bye in the first round of districts and won’t play until the second round Friday.
In Saturday’s game, the Buccaneers led just 28-26 at halftime but a 24-8 third quarter broke the game open for the league champs.
Defensively, the Bucs held Sequim’s Big Three players in check as Jayson Brocklesby and Corbin Webb scored nine points each along with Tim Guan and Even Hill.
Putting on clamps
The third prong of that attack, Gabe Carter, came up with just two points.
Carter did lead on the boards, though, with 10 rebounds, and he also had four assists.
Against Clover Park on Friday night, the Big Three fared better as Brocklesby led the way with 18 points while Webb neeted 17 and Carter drained 13.
Carter led on the boards again with 11 rebounds while Webb grabbed six and Brocklesby had three.
Carter also had four assists in Friday’s contest while Webb dished out three.

BOTHELL — Landon Cray and Quinn Eldridge combined for 26 points to spark the Cowboys to the must-win against Cedar Park Christian in a pigtail play-in game.
Lucas Dukek had the winning shot with a 3-point bomb at the buzzer.
Derek Ajax threw a full-court pass to Dukek, who turned and buried the game-winner.
Those were Dukek’s only points of the game.
Cray canned 14 points while Eldridge had 12.
The Cowboys open 1A West Central District play Tuesday against state powerhouse and No. 10-ranked Seattle Christian, which has beaten Chimacum twice this year.
The Cowboys, though, are in double-elimination play.

TUKWILA — Lindbergh held the Roughriders in check in the seventh-eighth seeding game in subdistricts Saturday at Foss High School.
The Riders will be the eighth seed at the West Central District 2A double-elimination tourney, which starts Tuesday.
Port Angeles plays at 8 p.m. at Lakes High School in Lakewood.
The Riders were never out of the game against Lindbergh, trailing 28-23 at halftime and 41-35 at the end of three quarters of play.
Lindbergh’s James Keum led everybody with 18 points while Marshall Elliott of Port Angeles sank 17.

Forks in loser-out mode at districts
TUMWATER — A double-overtime loss to Kalama on Friday night means that the Spartans have to win their next two games at the Southwest District tournament to keep advancing.
Forks coach Scott Justus said he didn’t know how his players will respond to two do-or-die games after the emotional loss in the first round of the double-elimination tourney.
“We were pretty down right after the game,” Justus said.
The Chinooks won 60-50 after the two teams were tied 42-all at the end of regulation and 49-49 after the first overtime period.
But it gets worse for the emotional state of the Spartans.
They were ahead by six with about 2 minutes left in the first overtime.
But they began missing foul shots and that doomed them. They were 3 of 8 in the two overtime periods, 1 of 6 in a stretch that included the final minutes in the first overtime.
“Forks missed some key free throws that could’ve sealed the game but gave us life,” Kalama coach Jody Stemkoski told The Daily News of Longview.
The Spartans will regroup for the consolation bracket starting Tuesday night at Black Hills High School in Tumwater.
Forks takes on Castle Rock, which knocked the Spartans out of the playoffs at the exact same spot last year.
The Spartans, though, need to get better physically as several members of the team, including Justus, are fighting the flu.
“I was sick during the whole trip and game,” Justus said. “I came home and threw up.”
Justus spent most of Saturday in bed and felt bad about not watching film of Castle Rock games.
‘Castle Rock has a kid, Will Dolan, who can flat shoot lights-out,” Justus said.
Dolan has scored 30-plus points several times this year, Justus said.
The coach expects his Spartans to have their hands full Tuesday.
