PORT ANGELES — The Sequim Wolves boys soccer team won a hard-fought nonleague battle over archrival Port Angeles on Wednesday night by a score of 2-1.
The game was scoreless until the 61st minute when Jerry Azanza scored for Sequim off a Nick Camporini assist.
The Riders (1-2 overall) tied the game up with seven minutes remaining to play when Svetleo Hurd scored unassisted.
Two minutes later the Wolves (1-0 overall) put the game away with a header goal from Zane Carey after Austin Sanford volleyed the ball up high.
Sequim had a 16-7 advantage in shots for the match.
“We played well, especially in the second half,” Sequim coach Dave Brasher said.
“We were a little nervous, a little tentative but overall I was happy with how we played.”
Sequim goalkeeper John Textor had three saves, one a one-on-one breakaway.
“John played well in his first game as a goalie,” Brasher said.
Port Angeles freshman goalkeeper Jack Doryland had six saves.
Roughriders coach Chris Saari said he was pleased with the Riders effort.
“It was a good battle throughout, and on both ends of the field,” Saari said.
“Chris always has his kids ready to play,” Brasher added.
Sequim travels to play North Mason today while Port Angeles does the same on Saturday.

Baseball Chimacum 8, Vashon Island 1
CHIMACUM — The Cowboys’ superb pitching by Joe Modispacher and Austin McConnell, combined with 11 hits and solid defense, added up to a strong first Nisqually League win Wednesday afternoon.
Though Modispacher was the starting pitcher, McConnell earned the win, giving up just two hits in three innings while striking out seven batters.
The Cowboys (1-0 in league, 2-0 overall) took a knotted game into the fifth inning before scoring twice to take the lead.
In the sixth, the bats came alive as Chimacum scored five more times off of Vashon relievers.
Quinn Eldridge was 3-3 on the day to lead the Cowboys while McConnell was 2-3 with a double and a triple and 2 RBI to support his pitching efforts.
Devin Manix also went 2-3 for Chimacum with a single RBI.

TACOMA — Early season mistakes doomed the Wolves on Wednesday.
Sequim (0-2) was leading 11-7 going into the seventh inning but two errors helped lead to five runs and a late-inning win by Bellarmine.
“We have some things to work on,” Sequim coach Dave Ditlefsen said.
The Wolves next host Forks in a nonleague game Friday.

DES MOINES — The Wolves exploded for nine runs in the fifth inning to break open a 2-2 stalemate Tuesday.
Sequim (2-1) added five more runs in the sixth to end it on the mercy rule.
“We came alive in the fifth inning,” Sequim coach Mel Hendrickson said.
“It’s been a pretty good beginning of the season for us.”
Demiree Briones improved to 2-1 on the year with the pitching win, striking out five and allowing five hits in six innings. She walked just one.
Seven players had multiple hits for the Wolves with Briones leading the way by going 5-for-5 with two triples, a double and five RBI.
Maddy Zbaraschuk also had a triple with two RBI while Chelsea Winfield had three RBI.
The Wolves host Forks in a nonleague game Friday.

Girls Tennis Port Angeles 6, Central Kitsap 1
PORT ANGELES — The Class 3A Roughriders got their season off to a solid start, defeating the Class 4A Cougars.
“It took us a while to get rid of the butterflies, but once the girls settled in they played well,” coach Brian Gundersen said.
“We lost some talented seniors [from last year’s team], but the girls stepped up and it was a great way to start the season.”
Gundersen picked Alexis Corn, who won 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 in No. 2 singles, as the player of the match.
“Alexis played a two-and-a-half-hour match,” Gundersen said. “She hung in there the whole time and pulled it out in the third set.”
Shayla Bohman also won in singles, beating Juieann Wurden 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3.
Port Angeles swept doubles with Grace Van Rossen/Mallory Hoch winning 6-4, 6-3; Chantel La/Chelsea Drake winning 6-4, 6-4; Caylie Cook/Laney Boyd winning 6-2, 6-1 and Danielle Rutherford/Jessica Madison winning 6-4, 7-5.
The Riders next play at Bremerton next Wednesday.
