SEQUIM — Nick Camporini scored the winning goal with eight minutes left in the game as Sequim held off Chimacum 2-1 in nonleague boys soccer action Tuesday night.
Jake Dewald kicked a through ball on the right side to Camporini, who beat his man and ripped it in at the 72nd minute.
The Wolves improve to 2-0 overall after beating archrival Port Angeles on Saturday while the Cowboys lost their first game of the year.
The game was not as close as the score indicated as the Wolves outshot the Cowboys 10-2 for the night and controlled possession of the ball for most of the night.
“Chimacum showed heart in the game,” Sequim coach Dave Brasher said.
“We played until the end of the game and that is what matters,” Chimacum coach Kevin Coates said.
The Wolves went ahead 1-0 on the dark, wet, cold and gloomy night on a goal by Waylon Lam at the 35th minute.
Nathan Barrett had the assist on the goal.
Chris Pieper tied the game up at the 62nd minute on a penalty kick but the Wolves went ahead for good 10 minutes later on Camporini’s goal.
Chimacum goalkeeper Austin Maples had four saves in the game while Sequim goalie Byron Boots had two saves.
The Wolves next play at Port Townsend on Thursday in a nonleague game while the Cowboys next play Saturday at Klahowya in a nonleague match.
North Kitsap 4, Port Angeles 1
POULSBO — The Vikings led only 1-0 at halftime but exploded for two goals in the final 20 minutes when the Roughriders had many reserves in the nonleague game Tuesday.
Anthony Branden put the Riders on the board at the 60th minute on an assist by Tomrat Haskins.
Branden was named the offensive player of the game while Joey Pohl received defensive player honors and Kyle Bingham was the transition player of the game.
Port Angeles next is scheduled to host Klahowya in a nonleague game Thursday night but right now Civic Field is unplayable and the game might be moved.
Hoquiam 5, Forks 3
FORKS — Heavy rain didn’t stop these two teams from a Southwest Washington League scoring fest Tuesday.
Hoquiam (1-0) led 2-1 at halftime and scored three more goals in the second half to wrap the game up.
The Spartans outshot Hoquiam 17-8 but had problems getting the ball in the net.
“I saw a lot of good things in the game,” Forks coach Brian Bowers said.
“We were putting a lot of pressure on their goal but we were not protecting the net the way we needed to do.”
Part of the defensive lapses no doubt came from the wet and sloppy conditions.
“We had a hand on a couple of the balls that went in for them,” Bowers said.
Backup sophomore goalkeeper Sergio Chase had seven saves in his first varsity start.
Gabriel Camarena had Forks’ first goal of the year on a Wilson Luna assist while Juan Beltran and Omar Estrada scored goals in the second half for the Spartans.
Roberta Rodriguez had the assist for Estrada’s goal.
Forks next plays at Montesano on Thursday in a league game.
Boys Golf Sequim 436, Chimacum 455
SEQUIM — Chimacum’s Mason Moug earned medalist honors but the Wolves took the next three places to earn the nonleague win Tuesday.
Moug shot 78 in 18 holes at Cedars at Dungeness Golf Course.
Golf matches will be scored by gross score this year and not by Stableford scoring as in the past.
Ryan O’Mera led the Wolves with an 80 while Mallory Mahoney was right behind with 83 and Casey Torres shot an 87.
Ezra Perkins scored 88 while Josh Francis finished scoring for Sequim with 98.
Nathan Browning shot 87 for Chimacum to tie for fourth with Sequim’s Torres while Jacob Ruby shot 89, Kevin Miller 94 and Riley Downs 98 for the Cowboys.
The Wolves next host archrival Port Angeles on Tuesday at Cedars at Dungeness at 3 p.m.
Lacrosse Mountaineers 9, Gig Harbor 3
PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Mountaineers opened the 2011 season with a convincing 9-3 victory over Gig Harbor on Tuesday night at the Agnew fields.
A very large Gig Harbor team came to town with 31 players on their roster while the Mountaineers only had 14 suited for the game.
Mountaineers rookie Joey Hall scored the first goal with 8:06 to go in the first quarter. Two more goals were added before halftime, one each for Kevin Catterson and Brenden Carpenter.
Mountaineers led at half by a score of 3-1.
Olympic added three more in the third by Jacob Dostie, Carpenter and Keegan Gallagher.
The Mountaineers added three more goals in the fourth quarter from Catterson, Hall and Dostie.
Julian Walls was the big story in goal for the Mountaineers.
Gig Harbor got off 21 shots and Walls had 18 saves.
The Mountaineers next travel to Mount Si High School for a 5:30 p.m. start Saturday.
