TACOMA — From a rain-out to an early morning bus ride, things just didn’t add up for the Sequim baseball team as they dropped both games in the opening round of Class 3A West Central District tournament play on Monday.
“I am not making excuses but the rain out hurt us,” Wolves head coach Dan Perry said. “If we would have finished the game Saturday, we would have won.”
The Wolves were tied 3-3 with Mount Rainier in the bottom of the sixth inning on Saturday before the game was called on account of rain.
When play resumed at 10 a.m. on Monday, it was all Mount Rainier as they posted five runs in just two innings to win 8-3.
“It was just too much bus riding,” Perry said. “It’s hard to jump on a bus early in the morning and then be ready to play ball.”
After losing the first game, the Wolves were forced into a quick consolation loser-out game at 1 p.m. against Highline, who shut them out 7-0.
Shaun Johnson, who picked up both losses on the mound for Sequim, gave up two runs on three hits with two strikeouts in five innings against Highline.
Jim Coley led the Wolves at the plate, going 3-for-3, followed by Caleb Grubb (1-for-3), Aaron Petroff (1-for-3) and Wyatt Short (1-for-3).
The Wolves (14-8), who were held to just three runs in their two postseason games, came into the playoffs with the hottest hitting offense in the league, scoring 39 runs in their last three regular season games.
“It was a good season for us,” Perry said. “Fatigue just caught up with us and our bats went dead.”
