SPORTS: Sequim captures district volleyball championship; other prep reports

TACOMA — The Sequim Wolves went undefeated to capture the West Central District championship Saturday evening.

“The girls were pretty excited,” Sequim coach Jennie Webber-Heilman said.

The Wolves, the Olympic League champions, beat White River, Fife and Washington on the way to the district title.

Sequim opens state on Friday in the first round against fellow district foe Steilacoom.

The Sentinels knocked Olympic League runner-up North Kitsap out of districts and ended up the No. 5 seed to state.

Steilacoom came roaring back after being down 2-0 to the Vikings to win three straight games to shock North Kitsap.

The Sequim-Steilacoom match is set for 4:30 p.m. at Pierce College-Lakes High School, which is pretty close to Steilacoom’s home stomping grounds.

The Wolves beat White River in the district quarterfinals at Franklin Pierce High School, and then defeated Fife 3-1 in the semifinals and Washington 3-1 in the district championship match.

Sequim was the only Olympic League team to qualify for state after North Kitsap and Olympic both lost loser-out consolation matches.

White River earlier beat Port Angeles 3-2 in a loser-out first-round match.

In the semifinals, Sequim beat Fife 25-19, 17-25, 25-23, 25-19, and in the championship match, the Wolves defeated Washington 25-21, 18-25, 25-21, 25-22.

Steilacoom tuned up for its state meeting against Sequim by beating North Kitsap 17-25, 14-25, 25-21, 25-22, 15-8.
