SPORTS: Sequim boys tennis team completes undefeated season

SEQUIM — The way the Sequim boys tennis team has been playing, it was just a mere formality.

The Wolves (12-0 overall) clinched an undefeated season with a nearly-perfect victory, topping North Mason 7-0 to win an outright Olympic League title on Monday afternoon.

It was yet another easy win for a team that has barely been challenged this fall, a 5-2 win over Port Angeles two weeks ago being the most hotly contested match this year.

“It was a good team, probably one of the strongest teams I’ve had,” Sequim coach Mark Textor said.

“I’m really pleased with the kids and the season. It really went well. I felt like we kept improving as the season went.”

Sequim dropped just 11 games in Monday’s seven matches.

Joe Puntenney and David Richard each scored 6-0, 6-0 victories in their singles matches, while the tandems of Reed Gunstone and Mallory Maloney and Evan Hill and Andrew Gunstone had 6-0, 6-0 wins as well.

Byron Boots and Michael Lee won their No. 2 doubles match 6-2, 6-0, as did David Lopes and Kelvin Li in the No. 4 doubles.

Waylon Lam rounded out the Wolves victory in the No. 1 singles match with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph.

The Wolves will move on to the Class 2A Olympic League tournament this Friday and Saturday in Belfair.

The top three from both the singles and doubles competitions move on to the 2A West Central District tournament in the spring.

“I’d like to think we could possibly get two or three doubles team and two or three singles on [to districts],” Textor said. “What’s exciting is they are very dedicated.

“I think if they qualify they will spend a lot of time on their own this winter playing tournaments and practicing to get better.”
