SPORTS: Sequim blasts Port Townsend in baseball; Port Angeles walk-off hit beats Klahowya

PORT TOWNSEND — Sequim’s baseball team erupted for seven runs in the sixth inning to break open a close Olympic League game with Port Townsend on Tuesday.

Fred Serrano had two hits and knocked in two runs as the Wolves beat the Redskins 8-2.

The Wolves (3-4 in Olympic League, 5-4 overall) scored first with a run in the fourth inning, but the Redskins scored in the bottom of the fifth to tie it up at 1-all.

Sequim blew it open with the seven runs in the sixth while the Redskins scored once in the bottom of the seventh.

Port Townsend remains winless on the year at 0-7 in league, 0-8 overall.

Sequim’s Isaiah Dewan and Nick Johnston combined on a three-hitter in the seven-inning game.

Dewan pitched the first five innings, giving up just one earned run on no hits, striking out six while walking four.

Johnston threw the final two innings, giving up an earned run on three hits. He fanned three batters and walked only one.

Offensively, Serrano batted 2 for 3 while Cameron Harrsion went 2 for 4 and Alex Serrano was 1 for 2.

Both Alex Serrano and Johnston hit a double each, while Jon Donahue, Harrison, Austin Clement and Johnston brought home a run apiece.

Harrison also scored two runs.

Port Townsend starting pitcher James Delagarza went 52⁄3 innings on the mound, giving up four earned runs while striking out four.

The Wolves have the rest of the week off because of spring break and don’t play again until this coming Tuesday when they host North Mason at 4:15 p.m.

The Redskins also have the rest of the week off, and next play Monday at Eatonville in nonleague action that is a rescheduled game from March.

Port Townsend has a league bye Tuesday, and its next league competition is at home against North Kitsap on April 11.

PORT ANGELES — Pinch-hitter Zach Lovik ripped a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Roughriders their third victory of the year Tuesday at Civic Field.

The Riders improved to 3-4 in Olympic League and overall competition, while the Eagles fell to 5-3 in league, tied for third place with Olympic.

“We started off the game with two quick runs, and I think the kids kind of relaxed,” Port Angeles coach Chad Wagner said.

“Next thing you know it was 5-2 [and] we are trailing. We had a talk about not giving in and that we had to compete every at-bat.

“Our kids responded great, scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh to win the game.”

Port Angeles starting pitcher Michael Konopaski struck out five in four innings, giving up just two earned runs on six hits.

“Michael threw well until his thumb started to bleed, and then everything went downhill,” Wagner said.

“We brought in Corey Stone for one inning to set up Brady Konopaski, who came in and shut the door, earning the win.”

Brady Konopaski went 3 for 3 at the plate with three runs scored, a walk and a stolen base.

Kevin Herzog was 2 for 3 with two runs scored, an RBI and a walk.

Marcus Konopaski was 2 for 4 with an RBI.

“It was a great team win and a great way for the kids to start spring break,” Wagner said.

The Riders have the rest of the week off and then play at Kingston (1-6, 1-6) in league action this coming Tuesday.
