SPORTS: Sequim baseball team splits first two games of year; Forks softball defeats Sequim JV

SEQUIM — Sequim’s baseball team split its first two games of the season, playing between rain drops.

The Wolves lost 8-6 to Cascade Christian on Tuesday but turned around and beat Forks 11-8 on Wednesday.

Both were nonleague games held at Sequim High School.

In the first game, Cascade went ahead 2-0 in the first inning but the Wolves took the lead at 3-2 in the second before Cascade put the game away with five runs in the top of the fourth.

Sequim scored one run each in the fourth through sixth innings to make it close.

Brett Wright and Karsten Wake both had multiple hits in the first game with Wright going 3-for-4 with a run scored and Wake going 2-for-4 with a run.

Tyler Forshaw went 1-for-4 wih an RBI, run and stolen base.

The Wolves took a sizeable lead against the Spartans, 3-0 in the first and 8-1 after two, and held on for the win.

Nick Johnston pitched the first three innings for the win, giving up just one run.

Wright continued to lead in hitting by going 3-for-3 with three runs scored, an RBI and two stolen bases.

Forshaw went 1-for-1 at the plate with two runs, three stolen bases and a walk while Jon Donahue went 1-for-2 with two runs, two stolen bases and a walk.

SEQUIM — The Class 1A Spartans earned their first win on the year (1-1 overall) with the nonleague win against the 2A Wolves.

Forks was rolling after leading 8-0 at the end of the first inning but Sequim came back to lead 9-8 at the end of the sixth.

But the Spartans erupted for five runs in the seventh and the Wolves answered with just one in the bottom of the inning for the final 13-10 score.

Jillian Raben went the distance on the mound for the win and to open at 1-1 on the year.

She gave up seven earned runs, with a strikeout and five walks.

Raben and Tabetha Brock both went 2-for-4 at the plate with Brock earning three RBIs with a run scored.

Raben scored two runs while smacking in a run.

Freshman Sabrina Collins went 1-for-2 batting with two RBIs in just her second game on the varsity level.

Alisha Shaw went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.

The Spartans next is scheduled to host North Beach today in a doubleheader, weather permitting.
