TACOMA — Sequim and Port Angeles were still alive after the loser-out consolation quarterfinals at the West Central District 2A softball championships Saturday.
The two teams captured must-win games after they both lost in the first two rounds Friday at Sprinker Recreation Center.
Like the Port Angeles and Sequim baseball teams a week ago, the two softball squads were set to meet each other in a loser-out consolation semifinal game later Saturday.
Results of the semifinals weren’t available.
The winner of the semifinals was scheduled for play in the loser-out consolation final Saturday evening for the only state seed coming out of the consolation bracket.
A week ago in the baseball consolations, Sequim knocked Port Angeles out of the quarterfinals, only to lose itself in the semifinals.
Life got tough early for both Sequim and Port Angeles in the district softball tournament when both teams lost in the first two rounds.
In the first round Friday morning, the Roughriders were blown out 13-3 by South Puget Sound League powerhouse Fife, that went on to belt Olympic League co-champion Kingston 9-4 in the quarterfinals Friday afternoon.
Every Olympic League team was knocked to the nightmarish consolation bracket, where only one out of eight teams will survive and advance to the state tournament.
Sequim, the defending state champion and league co-champion, had the best showing for the Olympic League when it lost a thrilling 5-4 game to White River in the quarterfinals.

North Mason 1
The Wolves (16-5) continued their quest to repeat as state champions by getting by Olympic League-rival Bulldogs.
Sequim jumped out to a quick advantage, leading 3-0 after one inning, 5-0 after two and 6-0 at the top of the third.
The Wolves had 11 hits and no errors in the game.
Demiree Briones scattered five hits while picking up the win for the Wolves.
Bailey Rhodefer went 3 for 4 with a triple while Olivia Kirsch went 2 for 4 with a home run and an RBI and Briones knocked in two runs.

The Wolves gave up two runs in the top of the fifth inning after leading or being even with the Hornets the whole game Friday afternoon.
Sequim took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and led 4-3 after scoring once in the bottom of the fourth.
Demiree Briones went 2 for 3 in the game while Rylleigh Zbaraschuk smacked a solo home run and had an RBI.

It took only five innings for the Riders (16-5) to subdue Lindbergh in the do-or-die game.
Raelyn Lucas pitched a one-hit shutout for Port Angeles.
Both Tori Holcomb and Mariah Frazier went 2 for 3 each in the game with Holcomb knocking in two runs and Frazier hitting a double and getting an RBI.

The Fife Trojans scored three runs in the first inning and never let up against the Roughriders in the opening district game for both teams Friday morning.
With an 8-1 lead, the Trojans made a statement by scoring five runs in the top of the seventh to blow the game wide open.
Olympic League MVP Hannah Wahto, a senior catcher, produced a double and an RBI while Mariah Frazier and Carly Gouge also had an RBI each in the game.
Frazier, a junior shortstop, made the all-league first team.
