PORT ANGELES — The North Olympic 14U baseball tournament team’s season came to an end with a 10-1 loss to Burlington in the Junior Babe Ruth state semifinals at Volunteer Field on Sunday.
Burlington, the eventual state champion, put up some big offensive numbers as Daron Browing, Alex Fredrickson and Dalton Schwetz each had three-hit games.
Aaron Daut was the winning pitcher for Burlington, going seven innings and striking out two.
Burlington put up one run in the first inning, four in the second and four in the third to chase North Olympic starter Wesley King.
Michael Konopaski allowed one run in the fourth, and Nick Tweter held the Tigers scoreless for the final three.
Chace Souza scored the lone run for Olympic in the third.
Marcus Konopaski led the Olympic bats going 2-for-4. Brian DeFrang and Joe Barnes each had one hit.
“Unfortunately most of the Olympic hits found Burlington leather,” Olympic coach Colin Konopaski said.
Olympic finished 3-2 in state play, having only lost to the two teams that played in the state championship game — Burlington and Lynden.
Burlington topped Lynden 9-8 in eight innings late Sunday afternoon.
“This is a fine group of young men who have much to be proud of,” Konopaski said of Olympic.
“This group of kids had never actually played a game together until a month ago.
“To be able to compete with much more experienced teams says a lot about how hard they’ve worked.
“Considering our two losses were against last year’s state champions, and this year’s state champions, there is nothing to be ashamed of.
“I am looking forward to seeing these boys progress, both as ball players and responsible young men in the years to come.”
