SPORTS: Saundra Kent Memorial tennis tournament set for Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — The 28th annual Saundra Kent Memorial Tennis Tournament returns to Erickson Park courts at Fourth and Race streets the first two weekends of August.

As in past years, there will be separate tournaments for singles and senior doubles the first weekend (Aug. 2-4), and men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles the second weekend (Aug. 9-11).

The registration deadline for singles and senior doubles (60 and older) is July 28 by 5 p.m.

The deadline for the men’s, women’s and mixed doubles entries is Aug. 4 by 5 p.m.

Cost for the singles competition will be $20 for Peninsula Club members and $25 for non-members.

Club members must pay $30 per team to participate in the doubles competition while non-member fees are $40.

A 2013 club membership is $10 for students, $20 for individuals and $30 for families. If dues are included with entry forms, entrants may apply club discounts.

Entry fees must be enclosed with a signed entry form. All doubles partners must be included on a single entry form.

The tournament is named after Saundra Kent, a Port Angeles High School graduate who was one of the first recipients of a scholarship sponsored by the Peninsula Tennis Club.

After a year in college, Kent was diagnosed with leukemia and passed away.

The annual tournament and scholarships awarded by the club to Port Angeles and Sequim high school seniors allow her memory to live on in the community.

Competition will be organized based upon player ratings devised by the United States Tennis Association.

It includes categories from 3.0 to 5.0. Doubles teams sign up with the combined rating of both players, although the tournament reserves the right to place participants at an appropriate level.

Players may enter no more than two events per weekend. All matches will be the best of three sets with regular scoring.

Registration forms are available at www.peninsulatennisclub.com.

This is a non-sanctioned event, and is featured on the USTA website www.usta.com.

Forms with checks (payable to Peninsula Tennis Club) can be sent to P.O. Box 734, Port Angeles, WA. 98362.

Players are responsible for obtaining their first-round match times.

Draws and match times will be posted by 5 p.m. on the Wednesday before play starts at the Erickson Park courts and at http://tinyurl.com/6l9g7h (tournament ID No. is 600021213).

For more information, contact the tournament director at 360-775-9662 or 619-857-4372.
