Sports: Roughriders lacrosse team wins first of season

PORT ORCHARD — A shorthanded Port Angeles lacrosse team held off a late fourth-quarter surge, notching its first victory of the season in a 12-6 win over South Kitsap.

The Roughriders” David Gray scored six goals, Kyler Brumbaugh earned three, Brendan Hannan had two and Adam Williams scored one.

Port Angeles’ David Fries broke his collar bone in the game and is expected to be out four to six weeks.

Port Angeles will play Klahowya at 4:30 p.m. on Friday at Stevens Middle School.

Baseball Port Townsend 8, Coupeville 8

COUPEVILLE — The Redskins and Wolves played to a nonleague tie before calling the game due to darkness on Wednesday.

Redskins’ freshman Tyler Kelly hit a three-run homer in the third inning and Isaiah Sather went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Andrew Raney and Aaron Cavette each had an RBI for Port Townsend.

Up 8-2, the Redskins gave up six runs on two errors and four hits in the bottom of the fourth as the Wolves tied the game.

The Redskins also issued 10 walks.

Port Townsend (0-0-1) will play host to Bellingham’s Lynden-Christian Lyncs in a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.

Fastpitch Chimacum 7, Vashon 1

CHIMACUM — Aly Rae pitched an 11-strikeout complete game as the Cowboys defeated Vashon 7-1 in their season opener.

Rae, a freshman pitcher, also went 2-for-4 at the plate with a single and a double.

Chimacum’s Whitney Locke also went 2-for-4 with two singles and a sacrifice bunt.

Chimacum (1-0) plays at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Clover Park in Lakewood.

Central Kitsap 1, Sequim 0

Tuesday

SILVERDALE — Despite a two-hit, nine-strikout outing from Sequim’s Jessica Rosencrants, the Wolves fell 1-0 on Wednesday to the Cougars.

The Wolves were hitless and committed two errors in the nonleague game.

Sequim next plays at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at home against North Mason.

Boys Golf Port Angeles 121, Central Kitsap 101

PORT ANGELES — Led by senior captain David Mattie, Port Angeles defeated Central Kitsap in a Narrows League meet in 18 holes at Peninsula Golf Course on Wednesday.

Mattie took the individual medal with a low-round score of 74.

The Roughriders’ Joe Petersen shot an 82, followed by Chad Kennedy 85, Jesse Charles 88, and Nick Warren, making his varsity debut, shot a 90.

Central Kitsap was led by Sean Funucan, who scored an 82.

Port Angeles (1-0) does not play until after spring break.

Girls Golf Port Angeles 60, Central Kitsap 59

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders narrowly defeated Central Kitsap in their season opener Wednesday at Peninsula Golf Course.

Central Kitsap’s Vangie Robbins won medalist honors with a nine-hole round of 37.

The Wolves were led by Stepanie DuPuis with 18 points, followed by Tess Haggerty 16, Lacey McHone 12, and Sarah Richardson and Robyn Gentry, tied with 7.

Port Angeles (1-0) plays a practice round against North Kitsap at 3:15 p.m. on Monday at Peninsula Golf Course.
