SPORTS: Redskins beat Vashon in soccer

PORT TOWNSEND — Port Townsend’s 12 available varsity girls soccer players had little respite in a hot and competitive game against Vashon Island on Saturday.

The Redskins beat the Pirates 2-1 in a nonleague game played at Blue Heron Middle School.

Port Townsend led 1-0 at halftime thanks to Alex Akins’ goal at 40 minutes. Khloe Frank added a goal at 50 minutes on an assist by Irina Lyons to give the Redskins a 2-0 lead.

Catherene Amick scored at 70 minutes for Vashon.

The Vashon flat back was frequently breached by runs from Port Townsend forwards Lyons and Brooke Little.

Defensively, Port Townsend dominated particularly through the work rate of Elena Akins, Jennifer Grauberger, Chelsey Hoglund and goalkeeper Caroline Dowdle.

“Yet, it was the relative newcomers to varsity soccer, Chelsea Whipple, Taylor Mils, Kristin Griswold and Alex Akins who impressed by stepping up to the physical demands of this level,” Port Townsend coach Colin Foden said.

In junior varsity action, Vashon beat Port Townsend 3-1. Nakaia Millman scored for the Redskins.

Earlier in the week, the Redskins were shaded 1-0 by Klahowya in Silverdale.

“Eligibility and injury kept our squad down to 14 players, and the team was fortunate to finish the half only one goal down,” Foden said.

Stout defending from Elena Akins, Grauberger and Dowdle kept the score respectable in the first half, according to Foden.

Frank led a rally in the second half that almost produced an equalizer.

Three players were injured, “but the final 11 battled on heroically,” Foden said.

Alex Akins and Whipple had particularly good games, Foden said.

Port Townsend next plays at Kingston on Tuesday.

Pirates lose 1-0

ONTARIO, Ore. — Treasure Valley Community College scored at 46 minutes to nudge Peninsula College in men’s soccer action Saturday.

The Pirates could not answer back even though they hit the post twice in the second half.

Peninsula outshot Treasure Valley 12-6.

Goalkeeper Jase Hall had five saves for the Pirates.
