YAKIMA — There was a world of difference for Quilcene’s softball team from league and tri-district to the Class 1B state championships.
The Rangers dominated the Sea-Tac League, taking first for 1B teams with an 8-1 record, and they won the tri-district championship by pounding Highland 20-0 in five innings.
But they were blown out in two state games, losing 16-5 in five innings to Selkirk in the first round and then losing 14-3 to Sunnyside Christian in six innings in the consolation first round last weekend.
“The teams we saw at state, including those we didn’t play, were very good,” coach Nick Parks said.
“All were very consistent and well-rounded. All four of the trophy-round teams were from Eastern Washington.
“Unlike our teams on the western side of the state, I would imagine [eastern teams] were able to enjoy a fuller season, considering all the rainouts our regular season suffered.”
Quilcene ended up playing just 15 games on the year, ending up with an overall record of 10-5.
In the first game, Selkirk scored 10 runs in the third inning to erase a 4-0 Quilcene lead to blow the game open.
“They were a good team but we could have beaten them,” Parks said.
“We started out strong, putting up four runs to nothing. In the third inning, they got a few hits, we made a couple of mistakes and the wheels started coming off.
“Our girls kept fighting but we just couldn’t recover from that big inning Selkirk had.”
Quilcene’s Tawnya Turley won the sportsmanship award for that game.
Sarah Bacchus had a triple and two runs in the game while Turley had a double and scored a run.
Sophia Knutzen scored two runs and Amy Kaiser knocked in two runs.
In the second game, Sunnyside scored eight runs in the first inning to make it an uphill climb the rest of the way for the Rangers.
Savanah Drew was given the sportsmanship award for the contest.
Eighth grader Sammy Rae went 2-for-3 with a double and she scored a run. Turley scored a run and had a stolen base.

CHENEY — The Crescent boys 4×400 relay team claimed seventh place at state with Dylan Christie, Matthew Waldrip, Yanik Weingand and Joel Williams in a time of 3:48.31.
