SPORTS: Quilcene pounds Oakville 12-0 in softball; other prep reports

QUILCENE — Sammy Rae struck out 11 and improved to 3-0 on the year while leading Quilcene to a 12-0 shellacking of Oakville in the first game of a nonleague softball doubleheader Tuesday.

The Oakville Acorns won the nightcap 11-5 when Quilcene coach Mark Thompson put in a whole new lineup of younger players.

It’s more important that the younger players get to play and get varsity experience than to win every nonleague game, Thompson explained.

The Rangers have no JV program.

“We have 21 kids on our varsity roster, and we try to play them all,” Thompson said.

Overall, it’s an extremely young roster with 15 players sophomores or younger.

Still, the Rangers are 4-2 overall, losing just the second game to Oakville and to the Port Angeles JV earlier when Quilcene was missing a lot of its more experienced players, including Rae.

In the first game, Rae pitched a five-inning shutout, giving up just two hits while fanning 11 and walking just two.

Freshman Alex Johnsen was a perfect 2 for 2 for the Rangers while Megan Weller, who has been the top hitter so far this year, and Rae each went 1 for 3.

In the second game, eighth grader Alexis Grey went 2 for 2 with a three-RBI double.

“That was no fluke,” Thompson said about Grey’s hits.

“She got a hit off of Sammy in practice, and then in the game she drilled one to right field, and jacked one over the center fielder’s head.”

Also in the second game, eighth grader Bailey Kieffer pitched two strong innings for the Rangers. It was the first time she has thrown in a high school game.

There are only five upperclassmen on the Quilcene roster, including three juniors and two seniors.

“I have never coached a team with such a big roster before,” Thompson said.

“It is a real challenge. There is strength in numbers, though.”

Batting practice, however, can go slow, he added.

The Rangers next host Taholah today. They beat Taholah 10-6 earlier in the season.
