SEATTLE — Jacob Pleines and Jason Smith combined for 39 points as the Quilcene boys basketball team lost an overtime thriller to Shorewood Christian.
Shorewood beat the Rangers 72-66 behind Jordan King’s 33 points in SeaTac League action Friday night.
“We had the game won at the end, but we need to learn how to finish games,” Quilcene coach Mark Thompson said.
Pleines led the Rangers with 21 points while Smith was right behind with 18.
Tyson Svetich led Quilcene on the boards with 11 rebounds while Pleines grabbed nine.
Smith, meanwhile, had six steals and dished out five assists.
It was a back-and-forth game with the Rangers leading 17-14 after one, Shorewood taking the lead 30-27 at halftime and the teams tied 44-all at the end of three.
Both teams scored 16 points each in the fourth quarter for a 60-60 deadlock at the end of regulation.
Shorewood outscored Quilcene 12-6 in the extra period to earn the win and improve to 3-4 in league and 4-7 overall.
The Rangers fell to 0-6 in league and 2-8 overall.
“We are playing better,” Thompson said. “We got our first win last week against Clallam Bay.”
A key to the Shorewood Christian game for the Rangers was the inability to stop Jordan King, a 6-foot-4 point guard.
“King is a beast,” Thompson said. “He just drove right down the middle.
“We put our best defender on him but he got no help. Our help defense needs to get better.”
Shorewood features a big team. Center Kyle Howell, 6-6, scored 15 points.
The Rangers next travel to Muckleshoot on Tuesday for a SeaTac game.

SEATTLE — The Rangers came up just a little short in the SeaTac League game Friday night.
The Rangers, who made costly turnovers, missed fast-break opportunities and didn’t capitalize on free throw shooting, are looking forward to a rematch with the Lions at home on Feb. 1.
On a positive note, Quilcene played tough defense against the Lions and moved the ball well against Shorewood’s press.
Sammy Rae led the Rangers with 12 points, 13 rebounds and two blocked shots while Jerrica Viloria had 11 points and three steals.
Megan Weller tied for a team-high 13 boards, and scored seven points and two steals.
Andrea Lara added five points and two steals for Quilcene.
The Rangers next travel to Muckleshoot for league play Tuesday night.

Port Angeles second in 3-way
POULSBO — The Roughriders captured second in a three-way Olympic League meet.
North Kitsap claimed first place with a score of 147.8 with the Riders close behind with 141.8 and Kingston third at 137.75.
Cecily Schwagler was second in all-around competition with a score of 31.65. North Kitsap’s Chloe Seferos was first with 32.8.
Madylan Coventon of Port Angeles was runer-up in uneven bars with 7.05 while Schwagler tied for third place with 7.0.
Schwagler also was second in balance beam with a score of 8.5 while Coventon claimed second in vault with 8.35.
