PORT ANGELES — With three weeks remaining in the 2009 prep football season, the great majority of area teams remain eligible for playoff action.
Only Port Angeles has been officially eliminated from playoff contention so far.
Bremerton at Port Angeles
PORT ANGELES — With a little more than a week left until Halloween, the Roughriders play homecoming hosts to a program that could best be described as haunted.
Bremerton (0-5, 1-6) hasn’t won a league football game since a 61-28 triumph over Olympic on Halloween night 2002, a span of 45 league contests across three different leagues (Narrows, Olympic, Olympic-Western Cascade).
Like everyone else, Port Angeles has feasted on the Knights, winning eight games against Bremerton during the streak.
That includes a 13-6 win at Bremerton last season that kept the Riders away from a winless season.
A win on Friday night could do the same for this year’s Port Angeles team (0-5, 0-7).
Eatonville at Sequim
SEQUIM — After last Friday’s 28-13 victory over North Mason, the Wolves’ path to the playoffs is clear: keep winning and they are in.
Sequim (4-0, 6-1) will also be looking to give coach Erik Wiker his 50th victory as Sequim head coach in the homecoming game.
Wiker is 49-13 overall, including a perfect 24-0 in the month of October, since taking over as head coach for the Wolves in 2004.
Eatonville (3-1, 3-4) edged Fife (3-1, 4-3) 17-12 last week to give Sequim sole possession of first place in the 2A Olympic/Nisqually League.
No. 3 Cascade Christian at Chimacum
PORT TOWNSEND — Chimacum faces a stiff test in last year’s 1A runner-up.
The Cougars are looking for a trifecta of wins against Peninsula schools, having already taken down Sequim 21-7 and Port Townsend 42-7.
The Cowboys (2-2, 4-3) have a tough path to earn a playoff berth with this game against Cascade Christian and next week’s tussle with Port Townsend at Memorial Field.
To pull off the upset, Chimacum needs to avoid turning the ball over against the highly ranked Cougars.
Chimacum committed a costly turnover just before halftime of last week’s loss against Vashon.
Port Townsend at Charles Wright
TACOMA — The Redskins travel down to Tacoma needing to win out in their final three contests and have Vashon Island lose a game to edge the Pirates (3-1, 6-1) for the last 1A Nisqually playoff berth.
Port Townsend (2-2, 4-3) will have to shake off any lingering effects from last week’s fourth-quarter implosion, in which the Redskins committed four turnovers and yielded all 27 Orting points in the final 10 minutes of a 27-9 loss.
Charles Wright (0-4, 1-6) is struggling this season but has pulled an upset on a likely 1A playoff team, a 32-31 victory over King’s in Week Two.
Forks at Rainier
RAINIER — Forks playoffs hopes hang by a thread with two Southwest Washington Evergreen Division games left to play.
The Spartans (2-3, 3-4) must win out against the Mountaineers (2-3, 3-4) on Friday and Tenino (0-5, 0-7) next week and hope that Toledo (3-2, 5-2) is upset against Winlock on Friday and Rochester next week.
A Toledo win or a Forks loss eliminates the Spartans and puts them in a crossover game for pride against a Trico Division team to end the season.
Crescent at No. 3 Neah Bay
NEAH BAY — Neah Bay will battle a long layoff in addition to a tough Crescent (1-1, 5-2) team tonight.
The Red Devils (2-0, 7-0) sit atop the 1B Pacific Coast League’s North Division after picking up two consecutive forfeits.
Neah Bay hasn’t played since beating Clallam Bay 66-20 on Oct. 2.
The two teams met in an earlier nonleague game in September, with the Red Devils winning 42-28 on the strength of a 24-7 second quarter.
Lummi at Clallam Bay
CLALLAM BAY — The Blackhawks (2-0, 5-2) make the trek out to Clallam Bay (0-2, 0-4) for a 6 p.m. kickoff tonight.
Lummi has rolled in its two league contests to date, pasting Crescent 56-7 and Highland Christian 53-6.
