FORKS — The Chimacum volleyball team remained undefeated on the year by beating North Olympic Peninsula rival Forks 3-1 in nonleague action Thursday night.
It was a close four games but the Cowboys (2-0) only lost the second one: 25-22, 21-25, 27-25, 25-19.
Two players especially played well for Chimacum, including senior Natasha Keisel and freshman Krista Hathaway, coach Bridgett Kaminski-Richardson said.
“Natasha hit the ball really well and Krista served well,” Kaminski-Richardson said.
The Spartans (0-1), meanwhile, had a few kinks in their first match of the season.
“We missed a lot of our serves, which really hurt us,” Forks coach Jennifer Daman said.
Paige Kennedy had seven kills for the Spartans while Whitney Fairbanks earned three kills ad Gwen Gillett had two kills.
Setter Taylor Ingram dished out 13 assists.
Chimacum next hosts Kingston in a nonleague match Saturday while Forks visits Centralia for a tournament Saturday.
Port Angeles 3, Kingston 0
PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders (1-0) had an easy time in a nonleague match against the youthful Buccaneers on Thursday night.
The Riders won 25-5, 25-9, 25-17.
“Kingston is very young,” Port Angeles coach Christine Halberg said.
Emily Cook had three kills and two blocks for the Riders while Kiah Jones earned three kills.
Getting two kills each were Sam Manwell, Autumn Ruddick and Taylyn Jeffers.
Manwell especially was sharp in serving with 23 service points and four aces.
“Sam had a great serving streak,” Halberg said.
Darian Foley was good on 12 serves with an ace.
Setter Emily Drake gave out 12 assists while Manwell led in digs with four. Lauren Coventon had three digs.
Port Angeles next has back-to-back nonleague matches with Foster next week. The Riders play at Foster on Tuesday and hosts Foster on Wednesday.
Sequim 3, North Mason 0
BELFAIR — The Wolves (1-0, 1-0) opened the Olympic League in fine fashion against the Bulldogs on Thursday night.
Sequim won the three close games by the scores of 27-25, 27-25, 25-22.
Kaitlin Pallai and Maddy Zbaraschuk led the Wolves with eight kills each while Jessica Lauritzen had five kills.
Sara Hankins led in the backcourt with 14 assists while Taylor Balkan added 11 assists.
Sequim next has a nonleague match at Interlake tonight.
Neah Bay 3, Highland Christian 0
ARLINGTON — The Red Devils (1-0) shut out Highland Christian in a nonleague match, winning 25-15, 25-18, 25-11.
“We did OK,” Neah Bay coach Chon Clayton said. “We need to improve in a couple of areas.”
Rebecca Thompson had a standout match, earning 10 kills and six aces while Alisha Kallappa put down 11 serving aces.
Cherish Moss had four kills while Tori Thompson had six aces and Courtney Winck earned two blocks.
The Red Devils play at Lake Quinault on Saturday.
Girls Soccer Forks 3, Concrete 1
CONCRETE — The Spartans (1-1) led 2-1 at halftime and got an insurance goal in the second half for their first victory of the year.
Kylie Jo Allen scored two goals in the match, the first at the 29th minute and the second at the 56th minute.
Between those scores, Marie Moore scored just two minutes before halftime.
Concrete scored its lone goal two minutes into the game.
“Concrete’s first goal concerned me a little,” Forks coach Todd McDowell said. “But we kept our composure, and our older kids got into the groove and our newer kids stepped it up.”
Goalkeeper Denise Rodrigues had 12 saves for the Spartans.
Forks opens league play Tuesday at Montesano.
Girls Swimming Port Angeles 139, Bremerton 38
BREMERTON — The Roughriders (1-0) swamped the undermanned Knights on Thursday.
Bremerton had only seven swimmers as Port Angeles won 11 of the 12 events and outscored the Knights in all 12 races and dives.
Double winners were Emily Little, Tracie Macias and Jenna Moore.
Little won the 200-meter freestyle (2:15.57) and the 500 free (6:14.12) while Tracie Macias captured the 50 free (27.24) and the 100 butterfly (1:10.68), and Moore won the 100 free (1:01.43) and the 100 breaststroke (1:20.33).
Single winners included Kelsey Macias in the 200 individual medley (2:34.97) and Kyrie Reyes in diving with 80 points.
Relay team winners were the medley relay (2:08.60) with Tracie Macia, Kelsey Macias, McKenna Bell-Duffy and Moore; the 200 free relay (1:15.09) with Kelsey Macias, Tori Bock, tarah Erickson and Tracie Macias; and the 400 free relay (4:33.54) with Erickson, Jocelynn Pankowski, Lexie Pankowski and Kelly Winn.
The best race of the day for the Riders was by Little in the 500 free, coach Rich Butler said.
Little had pulled away for most of the race but had a swimmer come up from behind late in the competition.
“Emily held on for the last 50 meters to win by .6 of a second,” Butler said.
The Riders next host archrival Sequim on Tuesday beginning at 3:30 p.m.
Olympic 88, Port Townsend 77
PORT TOWNSEND — The Trojans edged Port Townsend in an Olympic League swim meet on Thursday.
The Redskins were able to qualify a number of athletes for the district meet and would have qualified several for the state tournament meet if not for the short length of the Port Townsend pool.
Port Townsend’s 200-meter medley relay team of Julia Griffiths, Serena Village, Olivia Cremeans and Chloe Aldrich earned a win and district qualifying time in 2 minutes, 3.87 seconds.
Village also picked up a win in the 200 individual medley in 2:28.49 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:15.19.
Both times qualified for the district meet.
Aldrich won and qualified in the 50 freestyle in 28.14.
Aldrich, Village, Griffiths and Renada Walcome also won the 200 free relay for the Redskins in 2:51.49.
Port Townsend hosts Klahowya next Thursday.
