CHENEY — Port Townsend long-distance standout Habtamu Rubio earned the top finish for North Olympic Peninsula athletes at the Class 1A state track and field championships last weekend.
Neah Bay’s Titus Pascua, meanwhile, sparked area athletes at the 1B meet with two second-place finishes, and the Crescent Loggers had two runner-up places in boys relays.
The 1A and 1B championships were held at Eastern Washington University on Friday and Saturday.
Rubio and teammate Bereket Piatt finished within a place of each other in the long-distance races with Rubio coming out ahead in both races.
Rubio captured third place in the 3,200-meter run in 9 minutes, 40.83 seconds while Piatt took fourth in 9:49.70.
In the 1,600 race, Rubio took fourth while Piatt was fifth, just .62 of a second behind.
The two athletes led the Redskins to 14th place in the boys competition with 20 points.
Chimacum’s one-man state team in Derek Toepper, meanwhile, placed in two events for the Cowboys.
He scored nine points for Chimacum, claiming fourth place in the long jump and fifth in triple jump.
1B State Track
Pascua took runner-up honors for the Red Devils in the 100 meters and long jump.
He ran 12 seconds flat in the 100 and leaped 20 feet, 9 inches in long jump.
The Crescent boys captured seventh place in the team standings with 41 points.
Joel Williams was second in the 800 in 2:03.82 while the boys 4-by-100 and 4-by-400 relay teams captured second place.
Members of the two relay teams were Dylan Christie, Williams, Beau Bamer and Eric Larson.
The Crescent girls 4-by-200 relay team of Anne Grover, Lynn Grover, Jandi Frantz and Kellie Belford also took second.
